falling down the rabbit hole 3/6/10

last night my fiance and i went to see Alice in Wonderland. i've been dying to see this movie since i've heard that it was being made with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. to prelude, i am a big tim burton fan. my favorite movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas (even my wedding cake will have a Nightmare Before Christmas theme: see here).i even own NBC shot glasses and a jacket.

furthermore, who doesn't love johnny depp? i mean, seriously? i even liked him in Cry Baby. and he is definitely one of those actors people, including myself, see movies for no matter the movie. so i went into Alice thinking this was going to be a win-win...i mean, how could it not? Burton/Depp!

i must say that for one, i need to refresh my knowledge of Lewis Carroll's version of Alice because i was a bit confused when watching this movie. but i went with it...no biggie. i thought Mia Wasikowska was great as Alice both in real-world London and Wonderland. johnny also plays mad very well, but we should know that already based on Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka.
the film was very pretty, yet not as pretty as i wished; and the red queen was great, but i do wish they included more garden scenes (that's what i remember of the original); and lastly, i wish it were darker and not so child-like. i knew it was a Disney movie, but i wanted it to have more edge. i think Coraline might've been a darker movie and that was totally animated.

this is just my opinion; please feel free to share your views whether you agree or disagree with my review. overall, i think this movie is about expectations. if you think it's going to be a 5 or 6, then it's probably more like a 7 or 8. so i guess i was hoping for a 4- or 5-star rating, and for me, it was more like a 3.5. i also wish they had done more with the 3d, but see it for yourself and let me know what you think.

check out this post on an Alice in Wonderland fashion shoot if you missed it.

  2. I haven't seen it yet there has been a lot of hype surrounding it though but I always had my suspicions it was just because of the amazing people behind it. I agree I thought the movie was a bit dark anyway (I have not seen it) but since you have said it isn't that explains why it isn't a 12 I would've loved it to be edgier and a bit more thought-provoking in a light way.

  4. I agree about the darkness. Alice is a kinda dark story, not really meant to be for the childrens. I think Johnny coulda been crazier and it could've been done more like Pan's Labrynth.

I was really confused too, having never read the book, so I was expecting more scenes from the cartoon movies.

I think if you do into it expecting more of a Disney movie, then it does a good job. I just think it would've been better if it was R-rated

  21. I am dying to see this movie. It is supposed to be a kind of sequel to the original story which is why Alice is all grown up. I think I read that Burton felt there was no need for a straight remake and wanted more scope to do his own thing. This is the first (slightly) negative review I’ve heard as all my friends have loved it so I will be interested to see what I think. Will probably see it this week so will let you know…

  27. Although it wasn't my all time favorite movie, Alice looks so fierce. The acting had so much potential, but something was lacking. :( Great post!

  28. Cannot waaaait to see this, although must say I'm disappointed that you say it's not as dark as you'd expected - that's rather what I was hoping for! Still, I shall not let it dissuade me, I need to go see it! Loving the Alice in Wonderland themed fashion that's popping up everywhere at the moment too...

  33. I was pretty meh about this movie, but I do agree with you on most of your post. It had some great elements, but overall, just meh. The movie's not meant to follow Lewis Carroll's book, though, because it's meant to be something of a sequel. I was pretty cool with the liberties taken on the storyline.
