NOTD & La Mode: La Roux 5/30/10

In my recent ELF haul I received 5 free nail polishes with my purchase. Obviously, I have to do a NOTD to showcase each of the free goodies.

I'll start by saying that I did not get to pick the colors so it was all a surprise to me. The first polish I'm trying is called "Innocent" by ELF. My guess is it's called Innocent because it's very light and dainty. Maybe it could have been called "Dainty Innocence" to drive the point home.

With and without flash so you can truly see how light this polish is, which isn't a big deal because I was going for something minimal. So I would suggest this color if that's the look you're intending.

My qualms: I think I would have wanted a shade just a tad bit darker. Also, the bottle is a bit weird (as another blogger mentioned on her review of ELF polishes), and it starts to chip after 3 days of wear. This is 2 coats plus a Sally Hansen top coat.

Overall, I would give "Innocent" by ELF 3.5 out of 5 stars.

...on to the next...

I know some of you have probably heard of La Roux--maybe for a while now. But I live in America and we're always late. We never get anything first and that goes for fashion/music/movies.

I was surprised when I came back from Europe and saw commercials for Iron Man 2 "Opening Friday" after I had seen it in Paris more than a week earlier.

Anyway, I've been really into this duo's song "Bulletproof" so I did some research about this UK band and decided that I enjoy Eleanor Jackson's style.

I mean, it's not near conventional, but I like it. Very fresh.
Have you heard of La Roux? What do you think of Eleanor's style?

Chillin' w/No Makeup On 5/26/10

Here are new accessories I just bought from Forever 21!
Where I keep some jewelry:

Pave Bow Ring: $5.

Antique Bracelet Set: $8

Crochet Beret: $5

So I thought I had a really good idea to let my husband wash my hair the other day...not sure what I was thinking.

I mean, at first he seemed to dread the idea. Did I say "let" my husband wash my hair, because I meant "force" my husband to wash my hair. I hate washing hair--love when other people do it. He obliged and soon found the task enjoyable, as did I.

After washing came a lot of combing. There were knots galore! So he says: "Next time, we use more conditioner...or we comb the shampoo through your hair as we go." And then I say something to the effect of: "There won't be a next time." :)

i don't blame him or anything, there just won't be a next time.

Coming from the realization that I just ruined my life, I decided to tackle this thing head on--pun intended. It was time to say goodbye to the wavy look and hello to the straight and narrow.

the horror!

after some time of straightening and moisturizing...

the result!

for the win!

oh, and as the title says, i'm not wearing any makeup...it was all about the hair this day.

Any new accessories for you all? Or any hair disaster stories?

OOTD: High-Waisted Hearts 5/24/10

In order to not go broke by spending all my hard-earned money on cute accessories, chic outfits, and OMG shoes, I've reinvested in an old skirt. I've come to the realization that I still love this skirt, and so should you.

For one, it's a pencil skirt, and it's perfect for shaping a silhouette. The high-waisted look adds curve and elegance. I paired it with this polka dot top all the way from London. I've mentioned this top before but didn't really feature it. But the back says it best: "Open your heart; I'll make you love me."

...or maybe that was Madonna...

Top: Primark £3
Sunglasses: Michael Kors

Skirt: Wetseal $12 (i think)
headgear: Claires $6

Oh, and I wore this belt but twisted it to the side because I think it looks great this way...and it adds a bit extra to an old skirt.

♥ ♥ ♥
I recommend listening to Madonna's "Open Your Heart" now because it's an awesome song.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead!

p.s.
Smashbox’s Quench Moisture Rich Lip Gloss is only $5 (a $21 value) right at Sephora!—It's a sheer watermelon shade. No promo code necessary.

Rehashed Fashion 5/23/10

The little town of Gainesville in Florida is known for its university and its football team (and by football team, I mean Tim Tebow). But aspiring artists also reside in that city, including 23-year-old Brittany Yurkovitch (by way of Tampa). This philosophy major turned dress designer launched Rehashed Fashion more than two years ago when she realized there was a demand for what she was supplying.

Read my interview with Brittany!

Oh to Be a Muse: How long have you had a passion for fashion?
Brittany Yurkovitch: I've always had a passion for art, drawing, painting and anything creative. I always liked pretty clothes, but I never thought about making anything myself until I had the idea to sew together t-shirts and bras [and] bikini tops.

Muse: Did you find it difficult to break into the Gainesville fashion scene?
BY: Not really. I've stayed away from Gainesville's official Fashion Week because there are fees associated with those events. However, I met a girl in a Race and Racism anthropology course who modeled in UF's Caribbean Student Association's Fashion and Talent Showcase. She was able to help me get my dresses featured in the 2009 show and again in the 2010 show.

Muse: Does being in Gainesville make it easier or harder: finding the clothes, models, getting the word out, etc.?
BY: Gainesville is a great place for Rehashed because of the student body population. I also have my dresses in two shops: the Land B4 Time Smoke Shop and Persona...[and] an abundance of beautiful girls volunteering to model for pictures so Gainesville has been good to me.

Lately, I have been getting requests for larger sized busts. This request is somewhat difficult because good quality and pretty bikini tops for large busts are challenging to find.

Muse: How do you brand/market your clothing?
BY: Because I use t-shirts, I have many marketing opportunities. I approached the Land B4 Time Smoke Shop to carry my dresses because I thought the customers coming into a smoke shop might appreciate sustainable fashion that uses hemp. Also, Persona caters to a market that looks for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces so my dresses fit in with what the consumers are looking for.

Muse: Why bras and t-shirts?
BY: Many women enjoy the cleavage benefits of bras and bikini tops. So, why mess with a good thing? Also, I do all my work by hand so I need materials that will not require me to do a lot of finishing work with a sewing machine.

Muse: How has your world changed since the beginning of Rehashed?
BY: Recently, I ran into a friend that I haven't seen [in] about 4 or 5 years. He introduced me to his friends as "remember that girl I was telling you about who makes all those dresses." Lately, I have been getting more and more people knowing me for my dresses, which is cool because they are excited about something that resulted from my own creative efforts, which is kind of neat.

Muse: Any new styles--adding pants, jewelry, etc?
BY: Now that the weather is finally warm, I have been exclusively making dresses. However, this winter was particularly cold and I was not selling any dresses so I started Rehashing some jackets. I found very good quality fitted jackets--cut blazer style--and I sewed, with hemp, t-shirt designs onto the jackets.

Muse: If you could style one celebrity who would it be?
BY: Good Question. Probably Lady Gaga because I know she would be down for something crazy and would be willing to try something new.

I am motivated by the continual compliments and requests by complete strangers. Many, many moments are memorable in that they give me a sign that I'm doing the right thing and that people like what I'm creating. I am still excited when someone stops me and asks what I'm wearing.

inspirations: Neons, halter tops, Barbie, Lady Gaga and Kate Carleton--a friend of mine who creates tons of badass t-shirt designs.

Let's Get Some Shoes! 5/21/10

As the boxes reveal, I recently bought some shoes from Forever 21. It's no secret how much I love F21. I wanted to get some high-fashion heels and also a pair of sweet gladiator-esque sandals. I think I scored!

Shoes...oh my god, shoes!

Perforated Ankle Sandals: $19

sandals with a kick: love how they look from the back and the sides. the straps on the sides are quite adjustable and the zipper in the back is great too. if you are a size 6.5 and have to get the 7s, no fear, because you can adjust the buckles to fit firmly (and comfortably) on your feet.

Studded Strappy Heels: $32

yes please!

Now this is a pretty high heel for me so I think it will take some getting used to--i.e., walking around in the house, doing laundry with them or something--a la, 50s pin-up style. But for such high heels, they are quite comfy and really flattering.

coolest part: you can change the tightness of the shoes with each little stud--pull it tighter or looser, it's your choice.

Diggin' these kicks? Have shoes on your wish list?

Boys Like Fashion Too?

My boyfriend--no...fiance--no...husband greatly supports me by reading all my little posts on Oh to Be a Muse (thanks hun), which is very sweet of him because he is not always keen on the latest trends or nail polish talk. And he probably refers to Christian Siriano simply as that guy from the runway show.

But he did recently inform me that he would love to see some men's fashion on here. I guess he's looking to spruce up his closet, or at least find some inspiration. Buy a man a blazer and all hell breaks loose! :)

So I scoured the Internet looking for both spring 2010 & fall 2010 collections that he would like, and that hopefully you all will enjoy too. At least I was able to look at some cute boys in the process. Here are some of the contenders:

Spring 2010
jean-paul gaultier
alexis mabille
hermes
this one is my favorite: it looks like it's for the kind of guy who just wakes up hot. he puts whatever on because he looks good in everything, especially hermes.

givenchy

what do you all think of these ready-to-wear spring 2010 lines?

Fall 2010
burberry
prorsum
moschino
versace

any men's RTW that you're currently digging?

I know this isn't about women's fashion so we can't imagine wearing these for ourselves--i don't know...maybe that hermes scarf or the moschino jeans.
...just a change of pace

Which designers do you think pull off great menswear?
