Model Pose: High Fashion

The last in the Model Pose series is a doozy! I thought I'd wrap up the 4-part series with a post dedicated to High Fashion modeling.

You always see these poses in haute couture editorials and even in episodes of ANTM. Here are my tips on how to make your OOTD posts full of high fashion flair.

Modeling High Fashion

Opposites Attract
You've probably seen this many times--models in couture gowns posing at garbage dumps and other not so pretty places.

Pose Pro: For some reason, posing next to trash, abandoned lots, or in bars elicits high-end elegance and makes you look even prettier
Pose Con: May be tough seeking out these obscure places

Let Your Body Talk
Keep your background solid and let your pose do the talking. Strike an awkward pose because sometimes high fashion means awkward posing.
Pose Pro: It's simple and doesn't take a lot of added accessories, just the right backdrop, an awkward arch, and a stunning shot of your face
Pose Con: Sometimes poses are actually more difficult when it's just you and the camera

Add Some Scenery
Wear a color that stands out with a beautiful scenic view behind you. Scenery adds texture to a beautiful shot.
Pose Pro: Pose for whatever you're wearing or want to accentuate (shoes, jewelry, your skirt). All you have to do is stay focused in the front
Pose Con: You don't want the wonderful scenic background to overtake your pose--you should still be the center of attraction

OOTD: Floral Me 6/28/10

Sunday I went to a summer BBQ, and this is what I wore:
my floral dress from Forever 21.

My nail polish is "Smoky Brown" by ELF.

I just got this belt buckle ring from eBay for $2!

I actually got to wear my crochet beret!

I've had these shoes for many years and I love them so.

My butterfly belt! I have a big thing for butterflies
so it was cool getting to wear this belt around the dress.

At the BBQ, my friend Ashlee was wearing these earrings, which are from Colombia.
They are watermelon seeds.

I would wear them if my ears were pierced. How cool!

This is Catherine--the BBQ chef!

Random scenic photos!

Did you all have a great weekend? Any summer BBQs in your future?
Do you like what I wore?

Rue La Runway 6/26/10

Ever heard of a little site called Rent The Runway? This is a good time to check it out if you haven't already. Remember this Halston Heritage dress that SJP wore in SATC2? You may not be able to afford to buy it ($325), but now you can rent it for way less ($50).

The site allows you to rent actual designer dresses at a fraction of the cost. You can rent them for 4 or 8 days and get the option of two dress sizes, and even qualify for same-day delivery if you live in New York. They have many designer dresses and accessories on the site that can all be rented.

Mark & James by Badgley Mischka
original $360, rent for $50

Catherine Malandrino
original $395, rent for $50

Alice + Olivia

Have nothing to wear in your closet? Big summer event coming up? Then this is simply the best place to find that dress you've been searching for. RTR will take care of the dry cleaning.

Model Pose: Accessories

The third installment in my 4 posts series on model poses is all about accessories. In so many cases, accessories really make an outfit--from the hats and headbands to the unique rings and flowing necklaces.

Here are various ways you can pose with accessories--ways that highlight these wonderful accent pieces of any garment.

Modeling Shoes

In Focus and Standing Out
Pose Pro: Forget about the background. Keep your shoes front and center in this pose the focuses on your feet and elongates your legs.
Pose Con: It can be difficult to get the right proportions without you coming off like a giant, unless that's what you're going for with this look.

Pose Pro: The focus will maintain on the shoes if you take your photo in black and white, stretch your bare legs out, but keep a splash of color. The color can be in the outfit you're wearing or, preferably, only in the shoes.
Pose Con: Difficulty lies in the color editing, but otherwise, the pose is pretty straightforward and simple.

Modeling Hats
Upside Down and Full On
Pose Pro: The hat is so obvious in this post. You simply can't miss it. Plus, it makes for a cool perspective.
Pose Con: Not everyone is comfortable with the upside down look, which is understandable. It can be tough to keep it pretty when posing in this fashion.

Pose Pro: This full on pose works so well with elegant hats. This is the best time to dig out one of your mom's old church hats and strike a daring pose.
Pose Con: The full, dramatic appeal of this pose won't be captured if the hat, itself, isn't dramatic.

Modeling Jewelry

Bare Skin, Tight Shots & Black and White
Pose Pro: The bare skin attracts your eye to the jewelry
Pose Con: Would actually not be great with too many accessories

Pose Pro: Creative pose that can feature rings, bracelets and necklaces all in one, tight shot
Pose Con: Don't use this pose for one piece of jewelry; it's best with multiple items
Pose Pro: Taking a jewelry shot in black and white highlights the jewelry more and everything else less
Pose Con: Black and white wouldn't be a good choice for vibrant jewelry, but as you can imagine, is great with pearls
