Movie Review: Always the "Bridesmaids"

Movie Review: Bridesmaids

bridesmaids1I realize I haven't done a movie review since the Red Riding Hood review back in March, but that doesn't mean I haven't seen any good movies lately.

bridesmaids4To the contrary, I've seen a ton of movies and a few of them have been quite good, including this latest Judd Apatow production Bridesmaids starring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph.

The best thing about this movie is that it is a straight up comedy. It's not a romantic comedy (although there is romance). It's not a movie with a big superstar actress trying to play a comedic role, which is a good thing. The number 1 reason I don't enjoy Rom-Coms is because they end up being predictable and the women are hardly funny.

Bridesmaids is the opposite. It's a movie that stars comedic women who know how to act, and that's precisely why it works so well. Movies like 'The Hangover,' 'Anchorman,' and 'Pineapple Express' are as funny as they are because they cast genuinely hilarious actors as their leads. That same formula was used in Bridesmaids, only the lead actors are all women--very funny women to be exact.

Kristen Wiig (who also co-wrote the movie) and Maya Rudolph are both SNL alums who truly shine in this comedic endeavor. Kristen's character Annie is a total mess, and she knows it. But her BFF Lillian (Maya's character) is getting married and she's been given the responsibility of the Maid of Honor. Sadly, Lillian has a new friend Helen (aptly played by Rose Byrne) who is a "little miss perfect" and who will do anything to sabotage Annie--which doesn't take much effort.

bridesmaids2Like 'The Hangover' a lot of craziness ensues leading up to the big wedding day, but it's all so hilarious that you almost forget that these antics and sometimes even disgusting humor are coming from a cast of women. It's awesome to say the least.

Another great thing about this movie is the cast is well rounded featuring a really awesome Melissa McCarthy (you may know her from 'Mike & Molly') in the role of Megan, the groom's sister, which is a far cry from her shy Sookie in the 'Gilmore Girls' a few years back.

bridesmaids3
Other greats include Ellie Kemper from 'The Office,' Wendi McLendon-Covey from 'Reno 911' and two gents: Chris O'Dowd as Officer Rhodes and Jon Hamm as chauvinistic Ted.

The fact of the matter is, go see this movie. Not just because it's entertaining and funny, but also because it's an all-female lead cast that shines like clockwork. The more people who support it, the more likely the "funny women comedy" will last, as it should.

I give this movie 4.5 out of 5 hearts!

  2. Ok, so I didn't really completely read the review b/c I haven't seen this yet and I love movies to be full of surprises!

BUT! I want to see this movie soooooo bad!!! For a couple of reasons and I think you might have touched on it here (but again, I didn't read it completely). I looooove that this film is geared to show women in all their goofy awesomeness. I read this interview with Natalie Portman and she totally touches on this subject when talking about the film "Tiny Furniture" where the protagonist is flawed and a real woman who presents real comedy just within her life. No romance really and no man who will solve everything or she's pursuing. Just the journey of a young woman. Anyhow, I hope Bridesmaids is that too, but funnier!

  15. I usually hate chic flicks, but with such a great cast, I'm not sure I could lump this in with all the others. Glad to hear you liked it so much!

  16. Ooooo you liked Thor too!!! I saw it with my kids and couldn't help but love it. Well, I love that kind of thing anyway, but I thought it was an especially fun rendition.

I haven't seen bridesmaids yet, and probably won't until it comes out on netflix, not because I don't want to but because I really only see kid movies these days. Sigh.

  27. Awesome review. This was one of the funniest films I've seen in a while and I love that it was an ensembe female cast that could hold their own with any of their male counterparts. Also, I never knew Melissa McCarthy was so funny!!! I was pleasantly surprised.

  33. Hey love,

Bridesmaids was awesome! Definitely 4.5 stars.

Sorry but I have to disagree on those at the bottom. Fast Five was utterly terrible, if not for the rock I would give it .5 stars, so instead I give it a one.

The rest are pretty accurate, but i think I'd give Paul and Limitless 2.5 stars.

    Good review!
