Movie Reviews: Moonrise with Abe, Ted & Mike

The Amazing Spider-Man was going to be included in this list, but after the hubs and I realized that neither of us truly cared to see it in theaters, we opted out. But I'm still reviewing four movies in this post so let's get to it, shall we?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Initially, when I first saw this preview I thought it had Tim Burton written all over it, but in actuality, he was just one of the producers.

Vampire Hunter is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a movie about a U.S. President who has a secret life killing vampires in 1800-Louisiana. So what would you expect from that? I know I was expecting Bill Compton.

Ben Walker looked like honest Abe, and I enjoyed how the movie incorporated facts from history. But the action scenes should have been more cohesive. Jen Fab said it best...it was a comedy, right?
Overall, I still have a bit of an axe to grind with this film so I rate it 2 of 5 hearts: ♥♥
Ted
If you're a fan of Family Guy then you're a fan of Ted. If not, then don't bother seeing it because the humor is crass and includes references to shows and actors from the past (just like on the cartoon). But it worked for me.

I think Mark Wahlberg should stick to comedies, especially with Seth MacFarlane & Mila Kunis by his side. Apart from a few ridiculous jokes, I found this quite funny. But don't blame me if a talking teddy is not your thing.

Thunder buddies for life. This gets 3 of 5 hearts: ♥♥♥

Magic Mike
I wanted to see this movie for the scene where Channing Tatum is in that black strappy velcro vest thing. I never saw Step Up so I didn't realize this former stripper-turned-model-turned actor was such a great dancer. The acting was OK, some lines were funny, but overall, it was a pretty entertaining flick.

Tatum really carried those other strippers (I'm talking to you, Tarzan) on his back with his grade-A dancing skills. Not to mention his body...or was that a butt double? Oh, and I think his character is stripping to become a furniture designer, but no one really cares about that. Here's another good photo of that vest, lol, and some gifs.
I think there was a review in there somewhere. Let's give this one 3 of 5 hearts: ♥♥♥

Moonrise Kingdom
Set on New Penzance in 1965, Moonrise Kingdom is the highest rated movie on this list, and it's easy to say why: a great ensemble cast featuring Ed Norton (my fave), Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, and two great kids ~ Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward.

Jared and Kara play Sam and Suzy, two kids whose awkwardness brings them together. Sam has an affinity for painting people in the nude; Suzy has an affinity for looking at the world through her binoculars. Sam escapes from a wilderness camp (where he is not liked), and Suzy runs away from home (where she is considered the difficult child). The film is all about the adults trying to find the kids and the kids finding each other, all while a great storm approaches the island. It's directed by Wes Anderson so you know it's quirky but very human and funny as well. By the way, you can go here to shop Suzy's peter pan style!

This gets the rating of the day with 4 of 5 hearts: ♥♥♥♥

Have you seen any of these movies? What are your thoughts?

And since we are speaking of movies on the Muse, I am going to see The Dark Knight Rises tonight! Review to come.

  2. Just saw Moonrise Kingdom last weekend and loved it! I'm a big fan of Wes Anderson - his movies are just a breath of fresh air compared to most of what Hollywood churns out.

I have to say - I also loved Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter. It was ridiculous, but kind of awesome.

  14. Thank you for your movie reviews, I always look forward to them because we usually get new movies here much longer after its released in the US. I really want to see Channing Tatum & Matt Bomer in Magic Mike. I saw a preview of Ted, it looked funny, but as you said crass humour, it maybe worth a watch for a few laughs
