Confessions of an Active Mind: My Sweetest Downfall

My mind was so active when I was younger that I found it hard to sleep. I can remember nights staring at my self-made "Half a World Away" poster for hours on end until I realized it was the next morning and I hadn't slept a wink.

My brain is never ending. Maybe most brains are this way...I don't know. All I know is, I always have something on my mind and sometimes those things are hilarious (if I do say so myself) and other times they are simply weird. Read on if I haven't scared you yet, and you care to know more.♥ I love how certain songs make me feel like I'm high above a mountain top with the sun kissed on my skin and not a care in the world. Currently, those songs happen to be Samson by Regina Spektor, Mango Pickle Down River  by M.I.A. and Breathe Me  by Sia (which I first heard in a 2009 episode of The Hills--remember that show?). Does music ever make you feel weightless, powerful, weak and infinite all at the same time?
♥ I judge. I can't help myself. I judge people for making stupid jokes. I judge people for not realizing when it's time to shut up. I judge people for wearing things I would never be caught dead in. But I think most people judge; it only matters if you're a bitch about it or not. Yes, your joke isn't anywhere near funny, but I commend you for having the gall to say it.
♥ The fact that Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross was born 3 days after me, 1 year before, in the same city that I was born in (Kingston) makes me feel the need to compare myself to her. It doesn't really make any sense when you think about it. She's been training to win a 400-meter race for years, while I've been trying on outfits and filling my closet with one too many pairs of shoes (first world problem) so I don't see why I need to compare myself to a world champion Olympian. Clearly, something's wrong with me. Or maybe there should be an Olympic game for outfit posts. They already have one for trampoline.
♥ Sometimes I think I'm the coolest. I mean, rolled up sleeves on a leather jacket kind of cool. I mean, shifting gears in manual even though you drive an automatic kind of cool. I mean, I don't know that lame song because I don't even listen to the radio kind of cool. I mean, knowing the lyrics to Mo Money, Mo Problems kind of cool. I mean, embellished cut out heels with spikes and studs kind of cool. Cooler than sliced bread.

Do you confess to having an active mind?

Lucky Fabb: Blogger Conference Preview & How-To

Hello all you beautiful Muses! This time next week I'll be in New York City with hundreds of other bloggers attending the Lucky Fabb fashion and beauty blogger conference. I'm so excited to be doing this, as last year I went to my first IFB_Con and that was pretty great.My hope is that this year won't be as crazy hectic as last year. I had over-planned (and under-planned at the same time); it rained...it just wasn't cute. But this year will be fabulous. That is my mantra and I'll be repeating it and willing it into reality. And how can it not be fabulous with a lineup like this?
Rachel Zoe...Lauren Conrad...Simon Doonan...Anna Sui...I have no words.

Also, I feel like I know more bloggers who are going this year (Ria, Tanvi, Jyoti, Jasmine...to name a few) so I'm bound to have an amazing time with these ladies by my side!I've been thinking about dresses and bags and heels and hair ever since I purchased the tickets a few weeks ago. So I thought I'd create a little set highlighting some items that I'm thinking about wearing (or something similar) to Lucky Fabb in September! And I say all this without having packed a damn thing!SwayChic necklace ~ Shoedazzle and Free People heels ~ Oh So Fab jeans ~ South Moon Under bag ~ ShopAkira dress ~

*Some advice for attending these blogger events*
♥ Be sure to bring your smart phone for hours of tweeting, blogging and instagram-ing
♥ Get all your social media in one place with TweetDeck or HootSuite
♥ Don't forget the charger for your phone and an iPad or other tablet as a backup
♥ Have your DSLR or handheld camera ready for snapping memories
♥ Pack flats so you can give your feet a rest from those fab heels
♥ Always bring an ample amount of blog cards to exchange with new bloggers
♥ Look gorgeous and carry a big bag. You'll need a place to store the freebies!

Will you be at Lucky Fabb this year?
Have you attended any blogger conferences yet?

Lookbook: My Max-ID-i.y.

What a complicated title. In case you haven't noticed, I try to be creative with my lookbook titles, and sometimes my creativity gets the best of me when I think a bit too out of the box (unless you totally see what I was going for with this title).

I was mixing "maxi" with "I.D." with "diy" since this outfit post is all about my latest D.I.Y. endeavors where I turned a crappy maxi dress into a flowy maxi skirt. I mean, the dress was so ill-fitting...I couldn't get over it. I had to cut off the top half and mess with the elastic to make it wearable. This is my maxi I.D.Wearing:
♥ Foreign Exchange top (last seen in Little Lace Riding Hood♥ eBay maxi skirt (formerly a dress) ♥ F21 leather jacket  Elie Tahari flats  Juicy Couture bagThese were taken after an early dinner at Naglee Park Garage where I ate some yummy bread pudding dessert that you might have seen on my Instagram. Then we headed over to Santana Row for drinks and a movie. I saw Cosmopolis starring Robert Pattinson. It was one of the worst movies ever. I was going to walk out of it and go buy a sweater at H&M, but it was already closed. Now all I can think about is how Robert Pattinson stole two hours of my life and a comfy sweater.

Movie Reviews: Total Recall & The Campaign

Recently, out of the blue, the hubs said he wanted more time to shine on my blog, so I told him that he could write my next movie review. So I've awarded him the task of writing not one, but two reviews here on the Muse. Let us know what you think in the comments!

This is the first time the hubs is guest posting on the Muse, so be gentle.
~~~
Hello fellow fans of the Muse. Today is my lucky day to become a guest blogger! You may have heard of me referred to as 'Hubs,' but today I gain my true identity as Ari, guest movie reviewer.
Total Recall (2012)
Total Recall was very much what you'd expect it to be from the commercials. It is a similar story to that of the 1990 original.
During a visit to Rekall, where you can imprint memories of anything you want into your mind, Colin Farrell's character becomes aware that he has been living a lie and is part of a conspiracy brewing between The Colony (aka: the slums) and The Federation (aka: urban posh).
Total Recall provides excitement, great action scenes, and even pays homage to the first movie through what I will refer to as "the triplets". However, making a comparison to the original causes this version to fall short. For instance, it doesn't even take place on Mars. Farrell is a good actor, and so are Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel, but to make a great movie you must incorporate at least one memorable performance and it didn't really imprint that memory in my mind. But the movie is worth seeing if you are a fan of the original and don't mind a remake not living up to its predecessor (as they rarely do).
My rating: ♥♥
The Campaign
The Campaign is a comedic, political satire. It displays the evils of politics that occur when winning an election overrides a candidate's altruistic dreams.
Cam Brady, played by Will Ferrell, is the incumbent congressman running unopposed until he is challenged by the hilariously goofy Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis). When wealthy CEOs try to buy the campaign for their own corporate agenda, these two candidates find themselves sacrificing morality and family in the process.
Among iron-jawed baby punching, awkward child confessions, and my personal favorite, the racially ambiguous Mrs. Yao, the movie offers a lot of laughs while also conveying a semi-serious message about corporations that finance elections. Overall, The Campaign was not the best movie either actor has made, but it lives up to its expectations and will entertain anyone who enjoys this kind of humor.
My rating:
Have you seen either of these movies?
Based on the reviews, which one would you rather see: The Campaign or Total Recall?
Makeup and Muses: The September Issues
September issues are out!
If you know anything about magazines then you know that the September issues are pretty much a big deal. If you're still out of the loop, then go ahead and read my review of The September Issue featuring Anna Wintour.
But seeing that this is a Makeup and Muses post, let's put each of these five September issues to the cosmetics test. This is not about judging the woman on the cover, but simply about deciding which makeup look you like the most, and which cover makes you want to pick up the magazine!
Sidenote: It would be nice to see some women of color on the September issues in the future.
For sh*ts and giggles, which muse has the best makeup...and cover in your opinion?
♥ Katy Perry on Elle ♥
This is a more stern look for Katy--something with a bit more of an edge than her usual bubblegum pop look.
But it does keep the pink, and Katy is known for switching it up all the time anyway.
 ♥ Victoria Beckham on Glamour ♥
This is a total contrast to the cover above. Glamour went with a more girly, playful look for Victoria, which is definitely different for her.
 It almost makes you feel happy just looking at it...or maybe I just want to spice up my life.
♥ Gwen Stefani on Harper's Bazaar ♥
It's no secret that I am a big fan of both Gwen and her band (new record coming out, by the way).
I think the magazines had a lot of pink on the brain, but that's cool with me, except I'm so used to seeing Gwen in a red lip.
♥ Miley Cyrus on Marie Claire ♥
I don't think I've ever seen Miley like this, as I believe this is a different makeup and styling path for her.
Does this cover make you want to read more or is it something you wouldn't flip through?
♥ Lady Gaga on Vogue ♥
I don't ever expect anything when it comes to Lady Gaga--meaning, I don't expect her to be girly or edgy or coy or loud. I just expect her to be Gaga.
She is a little unrecognizable on the cover, but it's definitely more of a haute couture look.
My favorite covers are between Gwen on Harper's and Victoria on Glamour, but I think Gwen wins it because of that big pink hat thing.
I want magazine cover makeup to make the covergirl look a bit different and stand out, and that works the best to me with Katy on Elle and Miley on Marie Claire. Since I'm forcing myself to pick, I'm going with Miley on best makeup.
Gwen ~ best cover ♥ Miley ~ best makeup
Feel free to disagree.
Inspiring Style: Wixon Jewelers
Can you believe it's the middle of August and summer is almost over? I swear this year is flying by. A lot of you might be gearing up for fashion week in September, whether you're watching it on livestream or attending one of the many fashionable shows and events. One way to get you in the high-fashion spirit is to think about various ways to accessorize with exceptional fine jewelry.
If you're looking for custom jewelry in MN, or anywhere online, then consider these special occasion pieces by Wixon Jewelers. A lot of the jewelry and watches are created from scratch in-house, which is what makes these baubles so unique. Some of my favorites include their colored gemstones and diamond pieces.Apart from specializing in custom designing, engraving, repair and a state-of-the-art gem lab, Wixon Jewelers also supports the community by partnering with organizations that give back, such as University Children Pediatrics, the Animal Humane Society, and the Main Street School of Performing Arts, to name a few.This Minneapolis jewelry store is a solid option when looking for a necklace, ring, bracelet, earrings or watch for that special someone in your life (even if that special someone is yourself). Wear one of these uniquely crafted pieces for any occasion and you'll be sure to steal the show.
This is a partnered post. All opinions are my own.
Lookbook: Geometric Naturals
This was from a busy Saturday a couple weeks ago. I went to a baby shower and decided to dress up a bit, of course. The day before, I was wearing my ruffle lapel vest and a random lady complimented me. Then on this day, I received compliments about this look from three different people. Too bad I don't always remember to give them my card. Are you good about sharing your blog card?What attracted me so much to this top (which was sold as a dress, but is clearly way too short for that) was the cool geometric design on the back because it's so different from the solid orange on the front.Wearing:
♥Retro geometric print top from eBay ♥Foreign Exchange shorts (last seen in Color Me Spring♥Badgley Mischka lanah sandals from DSW (bought for 1/3 of the original price) La Mer wrap watch ♥Juicy Couture bagAfter the baby shower we went up to Oakland for dinner and drinks with some friends at Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill. The restaurant is on Lake Merritt so there were so many great views and even gondola rides! But as you can see, I am wearing shorts and the weather was too cold for a gondola ride in the evening.
Makeup & Muses: She Wears It Well
She Wears It Well by Anastasia of Beverly Hills is debuting Fall 2012 and features a look that is a mix of classic Hollywood glamor and modern moxie.
The eye shadow palette is a great collaboration between the 1930s golden age girl and the modern day 21st Century it girl.
The palette features nine matte and shimmer eye shadows that are highly pigmented. You can choose to wear the shadows dry or wear them wet (what I opted for) if you want a more intensified look.
All nine shades are long lasting, and the matte shades have a smooth finish that is crease free. The shimmer shades are said to be clinically proven to firm, hydrate and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
The palette also includes a deluxe mirrored compact and a dual brush.
So let's check out my makeup and muses look with this palette!
Wearing: ♥ SWIW Onyx shadow ♥ SWIW Frosting shadow ♥ SWIW Foxy shadow ♥ L'oreal creme cafe foundation ♥ Lumiere fresh roses blush ♥ e.l.f. super glossy lip shine ♥ Dior Diorshow mascara
The nine pigment-rich colors are: Trophy, Glow, Latte, Foxy, Sunset, Frosting, Almond, Onyx and Toffee.
At first, I wasn't sure certain colors would show well on my skin tone, but once you apply the shadows wet, they really do show up quite well (even better in person than on camera).
My favorite shades were Foxy ~ because of the shimmer; Frosting ~ because of the snow-like brightness; and Onxy ~ because of the deep richness.
Much like the See and Be Seen & Lash Genius makeup kit that I received from Anastasia of Beverly Hills, the She Wears It Well palette includes some added fun with five face chart cards.
The charts came with tips on how to get the most use out of the palette. I based my look on the "Night Owl" face chart for a knockout smokey eye.
The other charts are "Eyes and Dolls ~ Anytime Eyes" "Cut a Rug ~ Classic Cut Crease" "Speakeasy ~ Nighttime Ombre Eye" and "Cat's Meow ~ Perfect Cat Eye".
The She Wears it Well eye shadow palette retails for $34 and can be found at Sephora or Anastasia.net.
Lookbook: Rosie the Riveting
This has recently become one of my favorite ways to wear my hair in natural styles. I just love keeping it big in front. And adding the polka dot head band made me feel very "We Can Do It," hence, the reason for the Rosie the Riveter title. Do you muses have any Rosie moments?I'm rockin' Essie Luxeffects Stroke of Brilliance on my nails ~ Klout Perk!Wearing:
 ♥ Charlotte Russe romper & belt ♥ Towne & Reese Willow necklace ♥ H&M Head Scarf ♥ Shoedazzle Saxon heels ♥ Apart Style Midnight Shimmer blazer ♥ Oasap punk spiked embellished ear cuffThis look includes a piece from Towne & Reese. I already own a few necklaces and bracelets from them, but I just had to add this Willow Necklace  in matte gold to my jewelry arsenal because it's simply too chic to ignore. The willow necklace is definitely a best seller as its sculptural tiled decoration adds some edge to any look. And if you're one of the millions of viewers who watched Emily Maynard on The Bachelorette this season, then you might have noticed that she was constantly decked out in beautiful Towne & Reese baubles like these Polly earrings, which I would so rock if my ears were pierced, and this stunning Harlow necklace.
