Musings of a Muse - Part 5

Forget thigh gap. I'm exercising for my rib cage.

Summer is right around the corner, which means warm weather, pool parties and beach bodies. I've always been slim--not skinny or thin--just slim. When I was a kid, a doctor requested that my mom start feeding me Ensure so I could pack on some pounds. I've always been pretty comfortable with my weight. And according to health charts, I should be between 104 and 131 lbs, which I am. And my BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9, which it is.

But recently, I've been letting my love of all-things-carbs take over. So at the beginning of May, I decided to change some things.

I've been going to the gym at least four days a week. I've been reducing carb intake when possible. I've been adding more protein (in the form of veggie shakes) to my routine. Making these healthier choices should come with a big payoff. And my main goal is to be healthier. But I'm not doing it because I think I'm fat (because I don't). And I'm not doing it because I want a bikini body (I prefer one pieces).

I'm doing it because of my rib cage. More specifically, a rib cage tattoo.

I love tattoos. I have two and have been waiting to get a third for a while now. I watch tattoo shows like nobody's business. After thinking long and hard, I've decided that my third tattoo will be on my rib cage. And in order to put one there and have it look boss, I will have to get in better shape. I'm not concerned about my body image, because trust me, I have no issues in that department. I'm more concerned with all the pain that comes with a rib cage tattoo. But I know it'll be worth it and serve as a good reminder to stay fit! Going for the goal by the end of August.

Inspiring Style: Joules Summertime Wishlist

Summer is getting closer and closer. I can just feel it in the air. It's time to start thinking about how you're going to enhance your summer style with some essential pieces. These are a few of my favorite things from the Joules Vacation Shop that I think will get you in a summertime--the living's easy kind of mood.

My absolute favorite piece from this collection is the Creme Bud Inaya tunic (#2). I love the watercolor pattern that reminds me of ocean waves. And the cuff detail on the sleeves makes for a guaranteed comfortable fit. The bonus? If you're on the shorter side like I am, then you can wear this tunic as a dress without the fear of mooning anyone.

Can't you imagine wearing the blue bouquet print shorts (#3) on a summer bike ride? Or stuffing the canvas bag (#4) with fresh summer fruit at a farmer's market? I'd love to wear the chic Parisian Trilby hat (#5) for a weekend picnic. And, of course, the navy bouquet swimsuit (#6) is great for beach bumming, with the aptly named navy poolers (#1) providing perforation to keep your feet cool in the hot summer sun.

Which piece is your favorite for summer style?

Lookbook: Wine & Dine

Memorial Day weekend is very busy in the Bay. In order to enjoy our time without being too involved in the craziness, a few of us decided to head to Livermore wineries. When you think of wineries, you think of Napa and Sonoma. But Livermore is a surprisingly great spot for robust reds and whites. I was too busy enjoying the weekend with friends, hitting the gym and catching up on Orphan Black to give a proper outfit post. Next time!

Cortnie's blog has been on my radar for a couple months, but I really took notice of it the day I realized we had the same awesome Nasty Gal skirt. I've been hooked on StyleLust Pages ever since. Lookbook: The Empire Strikes Back

I'm at the stage in my life where everyone I know is getting married or having babies. My newsfeed is full of it. Just the other day I was at a baby shower and this past weekend I went to a wedding in Walnut Creek. And there will be more on the horizon. Since the wedding started at 3:30, I knew this empire maxi would be a good choice. Plus, I'm down for any opportunity I get to use a Star Wars reference on the Muse. Bonus points if you can comment with which Star Wars episode this title is from (I through VII?) without using the help of your Google search engine.

So I had to wear this Down in Ibiza ("it's pronounced Ibitha"--sorry, Dark Knight Rises reference) necklace again because I didn't get enough of it last week. And I don't think you did either. For the wedding reception, I switched to my Prabal Gurung for Target sandals as those are clearly more comfortable and better for dancing.

By the way, this maxi is everything. I saw the white version floating around Pinterest some 8 weeks ago but couldn't find the name of it or the site selling it. Until last week when I saw it again on Instagram. Got my hands on this melon number and never looked back. Takeaway: shop social media when looking for maxis.

Makeup and Muses: Natural Hair Blowout

natural hair blowout
You might remember I got a blowout and straightened my hair last week. It lasted for about three days. I knew it wouldn't be long before it went back to its natural state, so I took photos of it all crazy and blown out. Let me tell you the process: first it's naturally kinky curly like this; then it's washed and shrinks just like this; after is a blowout like what you see here; then, with the help of a heat protectant & smoothing oil, it's flat ironed like this.
How do you like to wear your hair? Do you like super straight? Or maybe you prefer it curly? Are you all about the short styles or long hair, don't care? Perhaps you're a kinky curly naturalista like me? But maybe extensions are your thing for a quick change up? However you like to wear your coils, share with me in the comments!

Makeup and Muses: Venus Snap with Embrace Review

You ever see those pop-up ads saying flights as low as $59 each way? Sometimes I want to be spontaneous and just buy that cheap flight for a weekend getaway. If I were to do that and jet-off this weekend, I'd want to make sure that I was ready because life happens in an instant. I should start packing an "on the fly" bag for these on-the-go moments, complete with everything I'll need for an impromptu vacation.

One of the items I'd absolutely include in my weekend getaway bag is the portable Venus Snap with Embrace razor. This must-have accessory is travel size, adorable and effective. It'll keep your legs smooth from your departure take off to your return landing. All you do is add a little water to the ribbon of moisture and you're good to go.

Of course, the Venus Snap razor with Embrace is not just good for spontaneous trips. Forgot to shave? Missed a spot? Changing from pants to shorts? You can carry it in your small satchel and use it for any quick touch ups.

Want one for yourself but not sure which to get? The choosing process is easy with the Gillette Venus Razor Finder Quiz to help women find their perfect match. Answer questions about your perfect day, your skin type, how you like to shave and then get a style that suits you. I got the razor with the Sugarberry scented Olay bars!

What would you pack for an impromptu getaway? Have you tried the Venus Snap razor yet?

Lookbook: The Petal Short Redo

Did you all have a fab Mother's Day on Sunday? I didn't get to brunch with mom as she lives on the other side of the country, but she did get a C. Wonder gift from me. But let's talk about the look. If you read musings of a muse: part 4 then you know that I had plans to update these wisteria shorts in a new spring outfit. I remembered I had this awesomely unique double pattern blouse that would go perfectly. And I must say, I am pleased. Adding my favorite blazer definitely completes the look. Or maybe that honor goes to these fun Jason Wu Melissa shoes.

This is my first pair of Melissa shoes. I wasn't sure I would like them at first because they're so different from the shoes I already own. But they're actually a lot of fun. The grosgrain bow applique is the best part. They add a little something extra to the typical pair of flats. And I love wearing flats, y'all. I'm all about comfort and style.

On the Muse: Plaid geometric blouse c/o 6KS | UrbanOG wisteria shorts | Ultragirl + Jason Wu flats c/o Melissa shoes | Cob & Pen Down in Ibiza necklace c/o ShopLatelyTarget Mossimo blazer |
See how I've worn this Target Mossimo blazer on the Muse. Clearly, I like to wear it with collared shirts. And if you didn't think so before, it's obvious that pink and blue are a great color combination: my style tip of the season.

Inspiring Style: Santana Row Beauty Bash

Wednesday night I participated in the Santana Row Beauty Bash - a benefit for Dress for Success. As one of the featured style consultants, I gave some fashion advice to the attendees. But before the event started, I received a complimentary blowout and styling at W. Salon. My hair stylist, Mark, was really great and could work with my natural hair. One of the few times I've straightened my hair (that's what wigs are for). It'll last for another day.
At Scotch & Soda I sat in a comfy director's chair with my own little table. We had bottles of rose too. Women came in and had a lot of great questions for me, like: How do I introduce color into my wardrobe and What do I wear with a trench coat? I hope I was able to answer their styling questions, or at least get them a sparkling wine buzz.
This Nasty Gal cape has become one of my best investments. Just about everyone I spoke to loved my cape and wanted one for themselves. I also ran into Kathleen of KatWalkSF as she was doing consultations at Loft. I was a bit nervous about giving tips, but it was quite easy. I gave style inspiration, which is what a muse does, right?

What I'm Loving in May 2014

A few days ago I saw a commercial for Orphan Black. And then saw a second commercial for it on another channel minutes later. Clearly, my TV was trying to tell me something. So I went to On Demand and watched the entire first season. Loved it. Tatiana Maslany is a Canadian dream who is completely believable with each clone character she plays. Get on that. Season two just started!

I mentioned that Instagram is my fave social app, so I've been really into all things camera recently. I spent way too much time perusing Photojojo. You can find things like triggertrap (pictured)--where your phone becomes a camera remote; photo lenses (with telephoto, polarized or fisheye) for your phone...and so much more!

So I'm not just looking into great accessories for picture taking, but also great apps. That's where Camera360 comes in! Do you use this app for Instagram? I've been using it since the end of April and am totally stoked with the results. See this photo for proof! It's great for adjusting, saturating, texture, lighting effects, and turning images into perfect squares. And the latest update just gave me video editing!

And if that Instagram photo wasn't enough evidence, let me just tell you in a blog post. I'm feeling really into tulips right now. Those yellow babes were sent to me by BloomThat (total surprise) and I love them. Can't wait to get my hands on a second burlap bouquet with some pink or white ones--like The Linden.

What are you loving this May?

Lookbook: The Jump Off

First, the title of this post is from the Lil' Kim song from 2003. It's one of my jams, and pretty appropriate seeing that I'm wearing this lovely Mango jumpsuit from ASOS. I sort of want to live in jumpsuits all spring. Also wearing a beaded detail Willow & Clay jacket that's the perfect lightweight outerwear. Went with gold accents from the C. Wonder sunnies to the shoes. The coolest thing about the "CA" bangle? It represents both California and Cheryl & Ari. But my fave gold accessory here is the Cob & Pen rope necklace--I've wanted one of these since February!

Celebrated the hubs' birthday with a big "to-do" in San Francisco: dinner, drinks, dancing and fourth meal. And next week is Mother's Day. I already surprised my mom with a monogrammed bag from C. Wonder, which she loved. Got something for your mom yet? Try entering my $500 giveaway to C. Wonder to get your hands on great gifts. And happy Cinco de Mayo! Have any plans?

Makeup and Muses: Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Review

Dew is defined as tiny drops of water that form on cool surfaces over night. Morning dew always makes springtime come alive. Now, imagine that same concept for your face. The Olay Fresh Effects {Dew Over} Hydrating Gel Moisturizer was created to provide your skin with 24-hour hydration to make it appear more invigorated and less dull. Perfect for me and perfect for spring.

Think of it as beauty in an instant since it is oil-free, doesn't clog your pores and leaves your skin feeling awakened. This "spring awakening" moisturizer does wonders for a girl with dry skin (like me) because I need all the hydration I can get while still feeling smooth.

And the ingredients are key. Water is the first ingredient, which is fabulous because having water as the main ingredient in your beauty products (from skin care to hair care) is a definite beauty trend since water-based products are great moisturizers. It's also infused with honeysuckle and white tea for a little extra oomph.

The Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over is easy to use. Just add a dab on your face and neck. Put it on at night so you wake up with a fresh "no sleep required" look, or try it in the morning as a great start to your day. But it would be nice if it got rid of blemishes too.

You can find this at the Olay site or your neighborhood beauty stores ranging in price between $12 and $15. And the bottle is small enough to fit in your carry on when you travel, yet provides enough product to keep your skin hydrated for a few months, even with daily use. I should know as I've been using this since March and I'm still going strong.

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Olay Fresh Effects through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Olay Fresh Effects, all opinions are my own.
