Musings of a Muse: Resolutions

Resolutions with my hair ~ I'd like to start wearing it natural more often again, and to try unique styles that really protect it.

Resolutions with my makeup ~ Still trying to figure out lipsticks. I will resolve to wear various colors in my outfit posts until I get more used to the idea of a colored mouth.

Resolutions with my skin care ~ I used to be really good about removing makeup at night, but I've been slacking lately, which is terrible. So I'm going back to removing makeup before bed. I'll also de-clutter my skin care products and only swear by a handful of items.

Resolutions with my nails ~ Usually I like to do my own nails, but I'll try to make it out to the salon more often and get true manicures. I am the worst when it comes to nails chipping, so a professional manicure should hopefully solve that problem.

Resolutions with my clothes ~ I don't shop that much. Shopping bores me. I just want clothes to magically appear in my closet. So in 2015, I'll be more specific of the pieces I purchase: quality, minimal, timeless.

Resolutions with my overall style ~ Purge. My closet is filled with pieces I hardly wear (and way too many shoes), so I'm going to pretty much get rid of a ton of shit and kinda start from scratch in a way.

Resolutions with Oh to Be a Muse ~ Right now I post three times a week, but I think I'll change that to twice a week. I've been pretty busy and it's been hard to stay in touch with you lovely bloggers. Also, I've been spending a lot of time on social media, so I'm trying to find the best balance between social and blog.

Resolutions with my life ~ Not to make resolutions I can't/won't keep. ;) Happy New Year!

Lookbook: When the Ball Drops

On the Muse: | Versace for H&M faux fur vest (similar) | TJ Maxx lace top (similar) | Forever 21 joggers | Jinxy heels c/o Chinese Laundry | Target fedora | Foster Grant sunglasses | Prabal Gurung for Target mini satchel |

It was a low-key Christmas for me, and seeing that I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing for New Year's, that might be low-key as well. But I do know a look that I might wear--this lace number with a little faux fur. Faux fur is so holiday.

Last week, I took a pair of red pants from my closet and modeled my whole look around them. This time, I found this lovely floral lace top (because every now and then I'm a maxxinista), and worked a look around it.

I haven't worn this Versace for H&M vest in about a year, but c'mon, look how awesome it is! The detail in the back is pretty fab. So, enough of my nonsense. Do you muses have anything fun and interesting planned for New Year's? How are you ringing in 2015?

Movie Review: Into the Woods

As is tradition on Christmas, I went to see a movie as theaters (and Starbucks) are one of the few things open on that holiday. While everyone was downloading and streaming The Interview, I decided to watch Into the Woods.

Into the Woods is a musical that incorporates many of your favorite fairy tales and childhood stories like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. In high school, my musical theater class put on this play so I really wanted to see the movie version. It stars Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Meryl Streep and more.

So the story is about a baker and the baker's wife. They are tasked by the witch to go into the woods to find a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, a slipper as pure as gold and hair as yellow as corn. On their journey, they come across Little Red trying to get to grandmother's house (while getting entangled with Johnny Depp's Big Bad Wolf); Jack and his magical beans, Rapunzel, Cinderella and a couple of charming princes.

The story proceeds pretty much as the fairy tales say, but with a lot of musical interludes. Although there might have been a few too many songs here and there, the movie was quite funny and I loved the acting. Chris Pine, Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep dazzle. My favorite song was Agony--I truly suggest you go listen to it now. Into the Woods does a fantastic job at poking fun at the typical fairy tale story. At one point, Emily's character even says something to the nature of "I think I'm in the wrong story." The only thing I would drop it down for would be that it probably could have been 30 minutes shorter, but I could say that for so many movies these days.

Rating: ♥

Other movies I'd like to see before the year is over:
  • Wild
  • Big Eyes
  • Unbroken
  • Nightcrawler
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that you're ready to enjoy your last weekend of 2014!

Makeup and Muses: COCOTIQUE December Box Review

There are many subscription boxes out there these days, but I recently came across a box that was different from the rest. COCOTIQUE is a luxury beauty box service that is made specifically for women of color. It's always nice to find beauty and hair care products that are made especially for my skin type and natural hair.

The COCOTIQUE December Box features the Holiday HyperHair edition, which is perfect for the season. The box included 10 lovely gifts that I'm super excited about:
  • Alikay Naturals Creme Brulee Curling Delight - Aloe Vera, agave nectar and Argan oil topped with a pineapple scent to define curls - $17 / 8 oz.
  • Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil - penetrating scalp with 17 hair oils to promote hair growth - $17 / 8 oz.
  • Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner - locking in hair moisture without weighing it down - $22 / 16 oz.
  • Badger Lip Balm in Tangerine Breeze - organic extra virgin olive oil to naturally smooth and protect lips - $3
  • Luster You Be-Natural Defrizz Definie & Shine Serum - eliminates frizz and fly-aways from your curls - $10 / 2 oz.
  • Luster You Be-Natural Tangle Me Knot Detangling Shampoo - moisturize, soften and detangle your hair - $9 / 8 oz.
  • Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Blue Print - one stroke, high gloss and long-lasting nail polish - $4
  • Milani Color Statement Quick Dry Top Coat - dries and sets polish in 60 seconds; DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde free - $4
  • OKAY 100% Pure Black Jamaican Castor Oil - naturally grows strong healthy hair with Vitamin E to penetrate follicles and provide shine - $12 / 4 oz.
  • Jones & Rose Sexy Body Butter in Pink Petals - ultra moisturizing Cocoa and Shea butters to nourish skin - $15 / 4 oz.
The product I'm most excited about is the Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil. I'm also really diggin' the Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner. The product I'm least excited about is the Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Blue Print, as I already have way too many nail polishes, and I'd like to add more pastels and marsala-style colors.

Overall, the COCOTIQUE subscription box service really wowed me with this first box for December as most of the items are products I'd put on my hair and beauty wish list anyway. So if you're looking for a monthly box service for women of color, then sign up for COCOTIQUE! Choose your subscription (monthly, 3, 6, or 12 months), try your samples, purchase full size products if you wish, and share the love.

Lookbook: Holiday, Celebrate

This is my Rosalyn Rosenfeld meets Foxy Brown festive holiday look. As soon as I put on this vintage coat--given to me by the hub's grandma years ago--I immediately wanted to get my American Hustle on. Not sure if you've noticed this about me, but I tend to get a bag and latch on to it. That means, prepare to see this Kate Spade beauty all the damn time. But I think it goes pretty well with these red pants. When I thought "holiday look" red, black and sparkle came to mind. And this is as festive as it's going to get, as I have no Christmas tree or decorations in my home. Maybe next year. Not being a Grinch. Just more concerned with the playoffs, lol.

I'm becoming a little less busy, so I'll make my way to your blogs this week. In the meantime, keep up with me on Instagram. I spend way too much time there (because my phone is always with me, and my laptop isn't).

On the Muse: | H&M floppy hat | Ray-Ban foldable wayfarers | Smashbox Bordeaux lipstick | ShopLately necklace | Vintage coat | Zara organic cotton T-shirt | Subtle Luxury speckled metallic scarf c/o POPSUGAR Must Have Box | Ark & Co trousers | Forever 21 sandals | Kate Spade Charlotte street Sloan bag |

Inspiring Style: 12 Days of Christmas Gifts

| 12 (Dozen) Roses | 11 Songs on a Playlist | 10 Pairs of Socks (J. Crew) | 9 Colorful Macarons | 8 Quirky Ornaments (Target) | 7 Fun Hair Accessories (Forever 21) | 6 Bottles of Wine (Waitrose) | 5 Spirited Polishes | 4 | 3 Scented Candles (C. Wonder) | 2 Doggy Sweaters | 1 Mistletoe |

I know there are only about 7 days left before Christmas (and that Chanukah has already begun--oy vey), but humor me. So I thought I'd do a fun little twist on the 12 Days of Christmas with a few gifts you can buy last minute for girls, for fun and for life in general.

I'm getting those Target ornaments for sure--if I get a tree this year. But I'll probably get them anyway because I can't say no to anything Star Wars. And all those nail polishes are in shades of the Pantone color for 2015: Marsala! If you haven't purchased a Chromecast yet, then get your hands on it immediately. It's like $35 and allows you to display anything from your laptop/tablet devices to your TV. It makes cozying up with a Netflix marathon over the holidays the most awesome thing in the world.

What I'm Loving in December 2014

Blanket Scarves from AEO - Yes, I know that blanket scarves are the new it item for the fashion blogger and practically anyone who wears clothes. But they seriously are a great accessory for the winter. I've never been a fan of thin, lightweight scarves, so I'm really happy to have these thicker, wrapped blanket scarf versions, especially the ones from American Eagle Outfitters.

Yes, Please! by Amy Poehler - As you might remember from this post last week, I've been "reading" the Amy Poehler book, Yes, Please! I say "reading" because I'm actually listening to the audiobook version during my commute. I'm really happen with it! I've never listened to an audiobook before, but it actually makes perfect sense to do so with a celebrity's book because you're already so used to their voice and them "talking" to you on TV. Plus, it's simply a great book with a lot of insightful information about her life, and she keeps it funny too.

My New Quote Tattoo - Back in a Musings of a Muse post in May I mentioned that I planned on getting a rib cage tattoo (and lose weight, which I totally did, btw). Although that was the initial plan, I decided to get this particular tattoo--Though she be but little, she is fierce--placed on my arm for a couple reasons: one--I wasn't sure I could handle the rib cage pain; two--I have a few tattoos already, but no one knows that because they're all hidden, so I wanted one that would be visible.

Kate Spade Handbags - I've never been one of those crazy Black Friday shoppers. Maybe it's because I'm into fashion, so I don't need one day to tell me it's time to shop. I do it all the time. But I got an email from Kate Spade to a link for items that were 75% off. 75% off, I said! And that's when I purchased this gorgeous Kate Spade Charlotte Street Sloan bag. The original price was about $500 but I scored it for under $200.

Peonies - Back in November I was loving orange roses, which was probably because of all the orange that comes around during that month. But now, I'm really into peonies. Every time I try to pick up some at the store they are always out. So it seems like I'm not the only one loving peonies this December.

Lookbook: Style to Inspire Link Up

My weekend was spent in Mexico. Since flights can get crazy expensive close to Christmas, I decided to sort of move my holiday up a few weeks. My mom came to visit during the week and we took her all around the San Francisco Bay Area. I think she really liked Muir Woods. Then the hubs and I went to Puebla, Cholula and Mexico City with some friends (seriously, not even yet back depending on when you're reading this). It was a fun trip with beautiful architecture and tortillas that never end. I think I should brush up on my Spanish, because apparently, my accent is pretty good. We explored tunnels, saw cathedrals, walked pyramids, ate, and I even bought a new pair of shoes from Zara. You might have seen some of my exploits on Instagram. I also took a walk on the wild side and ate escamoles cooked in butter. Although they were tasty, I think they gave me a stomach ache. Oh...escamoles are ant eggs.

At one of our many food outings--as there were many--we ate at this quaint restaurant in Puebla. Of course, I had to order horchata because Mexico, duh. And even though I'm not a klutz, I managed to spill said horchata all over my blanket scarf, jeans, boots and new Kate Spade bag. WTF? I'm hoping I can get something to wipe down the leather. Any ideas?

For this look, I'm wearing this lovely Cooper & Ella top (not the outfit that got spilled on). You might remember when I mentioned them in my Holiday Must Haves post because their holiday collection is a great resource for some amazing tops.

On the Muse: | Cooper & Ella Addison Shell top c/o | True Religion Halle mid-rise super skinny jeans | Kate Spade New York Charlotte Street Sloan bag | AEO mixed knee high boots c/o | Daniel Wellington Classic Winchester Lady watch | Target fedora |
And check out this wonderful feature that Leah of Sitting Pretty did for me, and this great post that Kinks Are the New Pink did featuring me as a chic read!

Makeup and Muses: 100% Pure Dark Spot Remover & Hair Mask

If you're looking for a few natural and organic products to add as stocking stuffers this Christmas, then you have to try some of the great items by 100% Pure. I've been a fan of their skincare and beauty products for a couple years now. They've been mentioned on the Muse a few times as well--from the Honey Almond Body Scrub and the Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream to the nail polish collections.

I'd like to introduce you to two other 100% Pure products that I'm loving this fall/winter, and that would make the perfect holiday gifts for anyone on your list who is into natural products or hair and skincare.
Dark Spot Remover - I try a lot of various products on my face. And I also happen to have very sensitive skin. Most of the products I try don't work, or they work at first but then lose their luster after a few weeks. What I like about the 100% Pure Dark Spot Remover is that it seems to be doing the job at making my skin appear more even. I get carded everywhere I go and everyone thinks I'm a teenager, and I chalk that up to having pretty even skin (and chipmunk cheeks). But it also means that I suffer from "adult acne" so I need products like these to remove those dark spots from old blemishes so I can continue to get carded well into my 60s.

What I love most about the dark spot remover? It's 100% natural and vegan (the first two ingredients are aloe juice and sake) and comes in such a kick-ass bottle, made from post consumer recycled paper!

My only qualm? I wish it smelled a little better. I don't need it to smell like fresh flowers (because unscented things are actually better for my sensitive skin), but it would be nice with a sweeter aroma.

Sea Algae Hair Mask - Although right now I'm wearing my hair in a protective style, I'm #teamnatural. This means that I'm quite picky when it comes to hair products because I don't want my natural curls to get damaged. So the 100% Pure Sea Algae Hair Mask wins since it's cruelty-free, natural and vegan. I don't have to worry about harsh sulfates ruining my locs. You can use this one to three times a week after shampooing (being natural, I use this once a week as part of my co-wash experience). Comb it through to untangle the hair while also evenly distributing the mask all over. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water. Then voila! Your hair feels moisturized, strengthened and healthy.

What I love most about the sea algae hair mask? It smells really nice, comes in an easy-to-use bottle, and actually makes me feel like I'm nourishing my hair with vitamins to restore any damage.

My only qualm? I wish this came in a leave-in conditioner form so I didn't have to wash it out.

Have you used these products or any others by 100% Pure?

Inspiring Style: Get Intimate with ThirdLove

Looking for some pretty pieces to get the women in your life (your mom, your sister, your best friend--yourself) this holiday season? Then look no further than ThirdLove. This company was founded to make the bra shopping experience more convenient, and ultimately, more fun.

And even if you're used to buying your intimates in store, you'll still love shopping for these same pieces online because they fit true to size and feel like a dream. It's been well documented that 80% of women wear the wrong bra size, and that's mainly because most women are in between sizes. So ThirdLove created their signature 1/2 cup sizes to guarantee a perfect fit every time. And you can even download their app as a virtual measuring tape!

I'm a big fan of the 24/7 T-shirt bra because of the memory foam cups that fit flawlessly for all day wear. And the bra also includes luxe pleated straps for no-slip comfort and added allure.

The underwear is just as great! Boyshorts are my favorites--like this mesh one in a girly pink, but they also have other fun choices like the typical bikini and thong and the more unique cheeky and tanga styles.

Don't forget to refer friends to ThirdLove. They'll get $20 to shop and you'll get $20 for every friend that buys!

  • Shop by Fabric - pick from lace, mesh, microfiber or seamless
  • Shop by Bra Style - choose full coverage, balconet, demi, plunge, T-shirt, strapless, push-up, wireless or convertible
  • Shop by Panty Style - get a style in bikini, boyshort, cheeky, thong or tanga

Lookbook: Monochrome Delirious & Audible Amazon Giveaway

On the Muse: | Missguided Merita monochrome shift dress | Kate Spade Charlotte Street Sloan (similar) | Via Spiga asymmetrical coat | AEO mixed knee high boot | ShopLately clubmaster sunglasses |

While I was away spending Thanksgiving in wine country, I went to this quaint little market in Napa that had this pop-up book store. It made me think: man, I simply have no time to read books anymore. And let me tell you, I'm a book nerd. The past couple of months have been uber busy for me, which means it's been difficult finding time to sit on a comfy couch and turn the page.

But even though I haven't read an actual book in ages, I'm still outscoring the hubs with word knowledge. He asked me the other day for a word like 'concise' and I said 'brevity' and 'pithy' and it blew his mind. He seriously said, "Jesus, I don't know that word!"

Anyhoo, I decided that even though I was busy, I needed to become a book reader again--and fast. And since I'm all about killing a multitude of birds with as little stones as possible, I knew that Audible would be the best bet to achieve my goal. Audible is a great resource for books for any and every occasion throughout the year. You might as well get a yearlong Audible subscription so you can read audiobooks any time, anywhere. Right now you can even use their gold offer and save 50% off! The gold offer gives you the first three months of your subscription for only $7.49--half the usual price. And there are a ton of other Audible coupon codes and ways to save too. Plus, you can listen to an audio sample of any book on Audible's website while you're browsing.

So I have yet another trip coming up--Mexico in just a few days--and I'll certainly need to download a few audiobooks for the flight and bus ride. This is why Audible is so great for when you're on the go. But it's also perfect for daily commuting too. I've officially become an even bigger Amy Poehler fan since I've been drowning out rush hour traffic with her hilarious and insightful commentary from her book, Yes, Please! Have you read it? I love the section about dealing with being nominated for a Golden Globe--or as she calls it--pudding.

Best Audible Books for Travel | Spring Break | Summer Vacation | Family Holidays
Best Audible Books for Your Best Girlfriends' Birthdays | Valentine's Day | Mother's Day

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention. A few lovely blogger gals and I have teamed up to give one lucky reader the chance to win a $200 Amazon Gift Card (Audible.com is an Amazon company). The giveaway runs 12/8-12/12 and is open to U.S. residents only. What are you waiting for? Enter below!

Lookbook: AEOSTYLE - Mad Plaid Hatter

You know what the fall means? Everyone is hella mad for plaid. I only started getting into plaids, tartans and flannels the past year or so when I found options that didn't make me feel like a lumberjack. Brands like American Eagle Outfitters are designing chic patterns that are actually stylish and wearable. That's why I was more than happy to take part in the #AEOSTYLE Challenge all about plaid.

My plaid look was inspired by scarves, oddly enough. I've seen a lot of flowy, plaid scarves while perusing Instagram, but no matter how much I scrolled my feed, a plaid blanket scarf never once magically appeared in my closet (I had to buy one myself). So getting my hands on this casual AEO plaid boyfriend shirt was the plaid reality I was waiting for--and in need of. This teal one is a soft, silky cotton blend that goes perfectly with the rest of my ensemble. I can't tell you how long I've waited to add a pair of ripped skinny black jeans to my wardrobe. And these super stretch jeggings take the cake! Since the weather is finally getting colder, nothing completes this look more than knee high boots. My shoe game for the year is now officially on fleek (stop trying to make on fleek happen, Cheryl!). These mixed knee high boots are unique and were perfect for my Thanksgiving weekend spent in rainy, yet beautiful Napa.

I wore this ensemble three ways: with the plaid boyfriend shirt; with the plaid shirt under my new TOMS for Target crewneck sweater; and with the plaid shirt tied around the waist of my AEO jeggings.

On the Muse: | AEO Plaid Boyfriend Shirt c/o | AEO Super Stretch Jegging c/o | AEO Mixed Knee High Boot c/o | TOMS for Target Crewneck Sweater | Amazon Plaid Blanket Scarf | Ray Ban foldable sunglasses | Target fedora | Forever 21 mini satchel |

Inspiring Style: Holiday Must Haves

Pure Ice Holiday Collection: I've become a bit of a nail polish addict these last couple of months and I ain't mad at it. Well, you probably have uneven nails, like I do. Thanks the heavens for the Ridge Filler Base Coat by 100% Pure. I see an immediate difference when I apply it on fresh nails, and an even better result with having polishes last longer. My nails are smooth so my manicure is pretty much flawless.

Well that's what happened to me when I saw the Cooper & Ella Holiday Collection. This contemporary fashion brand is all about affordable, versatile "date" blouses that feature picot stitching, unique cuts and the commitment to giving back. Makeup and Muses: Viva La Juicy So Intense Eau de Parfum

During the fall and winter I've been immersing myself in beautiful fragrances and succulent scents. And right now in December, I'm really enjoying the Viva La Juicy So Intense Eau de Parfum by Juicy Couture. The decadent scent is created with delightful and luxurious honeysuckle, mandarin oranges, gardenia, wild berries and notes of creamy amber.

This #VivaLaJuicy fragrance comes in a really unique bottle. The sculptural bow and transparent jewel case make it very princess-like. This limited edition scent is what you'll want to spray on before heading out to your holiday party this month. Plus it also makes for a great holiday gift!

Part of me wants to wear it every day, while another part of me just wants it to sit on a shelf and look pretty. It's amazing how much a well-made bottle can truly elevate a product. The spray itself also adds to the luxury. You can get your own fun Viva La Juicy So Intense Eau de Parfum fragrance on the Juicy Couture site in a holiday set and limited edition sizes.
This post was sponsored by Juicy Couture through their partnership with POPSUGAR. While I was compensated by POPSUGAR to write a post about Juicy Couture, all opinions are my own.
