The Accountant

In my opinion, Ben Affleck shines when he does roles that are more character based and less movie based. And what I mean by that is, he knows how to delve into a role and make a character memorable or relatable. The smaller the hype, the better the movie.

Case in point: Argo, The Town, Gone Girl, Boiler Room, Gone Baby Gone, Dogma
His movies that fail -- the big budget disasters: Batman v. Superman, Daredevil, Pearl Harbor

I don't know what it is, but Ben Affleck just shouldn't be anyone's hero. That's why I was so drawn to The Accountant as it looked like a role that would suit Ben's talents quite well.
Affleck plays a high functioning autistic accountant who gels better with numbers than with people. When he's not accounting, he makes his living cooking the books for criminal organizations. When one of his clients puts a hit out on him, things take a turn for the worse.

Some of the best parts about The Accountant are the flashbacks to childhood. Affleck's character, Christian Wolff, had to learn to deal with his autism through unique methods enforced by his father. Instead of hiding from the sensory cues that bothered him, Christian was forced to learn to live with them. He was taught how to fight and how to cope.

Affleck does well to make you believe that he can be a cold-blooded killer. Seeing that his character already has a hard time relating to and empathizing with other people, it's easy to believe that killing someone who doesn't abide by his moral code would be a walk in the park.
But there are a few instances where he doesn't really come across as a man with autism, but more so, just a killer with a one track mind. And when you really think about it, the plot's core doesn't really make any sense (you'll ask yourself, "but why, though?") and you could use one of Affleck's guns to shoot a bunch of holes in it. But overall, this movie is still a thrill ride with a few funny moments and a couple of twists and turns that manage to save it to some extent.

Recommendation: give The Accountant a watch, but probably in the comfort of your home.

Side note: This is the second appearance Ben Affleck has made in my Movie Reviews. Go read what I thought about him in Gone Girl a couple years ago! And this is Anna Kendrick's third time on the Muse. You can see how she fared in both Pitch Perfect 2 and Into the Woods here!

  5. You know...I'm a huge Ben fan, but you're right. I love love love him in Argo, but have yet to see Batman vs Superman (although I did see Suicide Squad and his little cameo in it was ok). I like him better in these character roles. Thanks for the heads up about The Accountant.
