Deddeh Howard's Black Mirror

This is what fighting for diversity looks like in 2017. Although Deddeh Howard posted her Black Mirror campaign more than a month ago, it's certainly not a message that should be left in yesteryear. Have you seen Deddeh's campaign yet? I mean, it's only been all over the internet -- from the Daily Mail to Teen Vogue.

I'm happy to say that I was already following her on Instagram before this whole thing exploded, so it's really nice to see how welcoming and inviting so many people have been since she took up this cause.
Black Mirror is not about making one race seem more superior than the other. It's not about trying to fit in. It's about showing that the social norm needs a refresh, and that there's room to showcase people of all races and backgrounds. Gone should be the days of every magazine being plastered with people of one skin tone. Showing diversity on the pages (and the screens) allows young people to see that there is a place for them in this world.

I'd also like to make a note that when Deddeh shared her campaign on her blog and social media sites, there were mostly positive reactions, which is great. It's always nice when people get where you're coming from. But since her piece was shared and re-shared a million times over, there were a few people who completely missed the point. Some even mentioned how they loved what she's doing, but why is she afraid to show her natural hair...
To that I say, what now? Deddeh typically wears her hair in its natural state. But doing so for Black Mirror wouldn't make sense, as she's trying to show that a woman of color could rock the exact same look (from hair to toe) at the exact same location and be just as good. And also, it's not about saying one is better than the other. Of course, you can have your opinion that you liked Deddeh's version more than Giselle's or Michelle's version more than Deddeh's, but it's not supposed to be about women competing against other women. It's about women being equal.

The internet is a place where people constantly miss the point.
What do you guys think of Deddeh Howard's Black Mirror campaign?

  4. I had appreciate her work when it had come out. People don's really use their brains before they form a thought or opinion. That's my honest-to-God well-thought out opinion.

  11. I thought it was an excellent idea! I love seeing women of color getting more spotlight in the modeling world. Beauty has no color and this campaign showed that.
