Hidden Figures: NASA's Black Women

I know this movie came out in 2017, but I feel like saying it's the best movie I've seen this year just sounds ridiculous considering it's only January 11. Would it be OK if I said Hidden Figures is the best movie I've seen in the past six months? Yeah, I think that works. But don't worry, Rogue One is a close second. No #HiddenFences here, lol.

Hidden Figures tells the untold story of the black women who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration -- NASA -- in the 1960s. It truly is amazing how many untold stories there are out there, especially ones related to black culture. It's not far-fetched to say that many accomplishments made by both black people and women were hidden in the 20th Century. It's funny when people wonder how they've never heard about this before. But let's be honest here, if you have all the power then you have all the control. This is just another reason why Black Mirror is so important -- if you don't see the diversity, then you'll never become aware of it.

I think we all know that women and black people didn't have much power in the '60s, which is why it's so great to see a movie that's chock-full of both. Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) are the focus of this film, which is based on the nonfiction book by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Mary Jackson was a mathematician and aerospace engineer.
She analyzed data from wind tunnel experiments at NASA.

Katherine Johnson was a physicist.
She calculated space trajectories for various Space Shuttle programs,
including astronaut John Glenn's mission to orbit the Earth.

Dorothy Vaughan was a mathematician and computer programmer.
She became the first black supervisor at NASA.

The movie tells how these women struggled to be taken seriously. Even though each of them were brilliant and worked alongside other brilliant minds at NASA, they were still first seen as two things: black and female. There were times when Katherine Johnson had to run half a mile to use the colored bathrooms as she wasn't allowed to use the white bathrooms down the hall from her desk. There were other times when Mary Jackson walked into an engineering college course and the professor told her that his curriculum wasn't written for women (as if that makes a lick of sense).
So yes, this movie is a bit heavy. But more importantly, it's inspirational. Take your husband; take your daughter; take your son. It's the type of story that people both young and old need to know about, especially in 2017. Young girls should know that they're capable of anything they put their minds to. Black people should know that barriers still need to be broken. But each deep moment also has an equally hilarious moment as well. You'll be sure to cry, laugh, feel mad, feel inspired and then do it all over again. So I recommend that you go watch this in theaters as soon as you can!

P.s., thanks so much for all the love on the new layout! And doesn't Janelle Monae's dress look a lot like this Chicwish demure number?

  3. Seriously am dying to see this. I've heard so many great things about the film, and the premise is something that everyone can relate to, IMO, no matter what race you are. As an aside, there was a big hoopla in the sewing world about a pattern co. who posted a pic of a pattern that was similar to something that was worn in the movie, and the model was Caucasian.
