Best Songs from the Big Little Lies Soundtrack

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm pretty obsessed with Big Little Lies. Now that we're in April, the 7-part mini series has ended, so I hope that each of you have watched the HBO show at this point. Or maybe you've read the book? Just know that I listed it as one of the shows you need to watch not just because the acting, directing and cinematography are amazing, but also because of the soundtrack. Whenever I google anything related to Big Little Lies, people always comment on how amazing the finale episode was (it really, really was) and they always mention the beautiful rightly timed music. So here are my nine favorite songs from the soundtrack -- go add them to your Spotify...like, right now!

Leon Bridges: River - Leon Bridges is the photo you see above. He was also nominated for Best Music Video for this song at the Grammy Awards last year. It's the kind of song that you hear once and immediately want to hear an entire album of more.

Charles Bradley: Victim of Love - I'm a sucker for a raspy voice. Can you believe this man struggled on the streets and was even a James Brown impersonator before finally finding his place? His story is inspiring and his song is impassioned.

Michael Kiwanuka: Cold Little Heart - (left) Between this video and the Leon Bridges' video, how could you not have all the feels. This is actually the theme song for Big Little Lies and for good reason. It's a dance alone with your eyes closed kind of tune.

Irma Thomas: Anyone Who Knows What Love Is - If you've watched Black Mirror then you've probably heard this song before. It's also an oldie (but a goodie). Seriously, it just has that classic 1960s soul vibe that just makes you want to dance with the one you love.

Agnes Obel: September Song - (right) You know this song must be great if it can make it on this list when it's just an instrumental. I don't always fall for songs with no lyrics, but this one is head and shoulders above any other instrumental. Makes me wish I hadn't stopped taking piano lessons in middle school.

Martha Wainwright: Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole (B.M.F.A.) - I actually quoted this song on my Instagram a few weeks ago. Some songs are made to express how you're feeling and to say the things that you normally wouldn't, and this F.U. anthem does just that.

Villagers: Nothing Arrived - I'm sharing the acoustic version because I believe that's the version in the show (and I like it better). In a way, I feel like all songs should have an acoustic version where you really get the emotion from a singer's voice and their lyrics.

Alabama Shakes: This Feeling - (left) So Alabama Shakes is a band in which you've probably heard of before as they've been around a while now and I've featured them on the Muse here. I'm not sure there's anything more spectacular and surprising than lead singer Brittany Howard's ridiculously impressive voice. Goosebumps.

Janis Joplin/Big Brother & the Holding Company: Call On Me - You might not know this about me, but I'm terribly in love with Janis Joplin. I think I've mentioned her on here at least in four different posts because I'm totally drawn to her rasp. This is not one of her super raspy ones, but I think I've mentioned Ball and Chain before so here's to something different yet still just as good.

I should add that I also really loved Zoe Kravitz's cover of Elvis Presley's "Don't" but there's nothing on YouTube for it. Go check it out on Spotify (it's better than the original).
