What I Loved: Summer 2018

Since it's been a few months since I posted one of these, I decided to make this one all about what I've loved this summer so that it encompasses everything between June and August. Maybe you can relate to one of these.

Skincare: Obviously, I talk about skincare on the blog and Instagram all the time. It's a big part of my daily life. I'm constantly trying out products to determine what works best for my skin. But when I say skincare here, I don't only mean the products, but also the process: increasing water intake, getting recommendations from my dermatologist and everything in between. Like I said earlier this month, I've been adamant about cleansing, exfoliating, serum using, SPF-ing and moisturizing (and using hair and skin care products that are organic). Also, I've been considering switching up my diet as well (possibly removing all red meat -- granted, I eat red meat like once a month), and maybe even trying vegetarian or vegan options -- not just for my skin but for health and ethical reasons as well. I'm considering switching out my nonfat dairy milk (in my chai) to almond, soy or coconut milk. Any thoughts? I've also been eating more tofu instead of chicken as well. I haven't yet switched out my cheese, but let me know if you have any vegan cheese options that you enjoy. Any non-meat eaters out there that can tell me what that has done for your skin?

Nonprofits: Recently I haven't been all that into Instagram nor the idea of being an influencer content creator. Of course, certain parts of the job are still quite fun (hard to beat being your own boss and making your own schedule), but you guys gotta remember that I've been doing this a decade now. There's a part of me that just wants to take a step back from all things influencer and instead find ways to dedicate my time to giving back. I'm not saying that I'm completely done with blogging or social media; it's just not doing much for me these days. And I'm not picky about the type of nonprofit at all. I just have a deep desire to work somewhere that actually makes a difference in the world -- looking for a sense of purpose. How do you guys feel about blogging? Is it still giving you life?

YouTube: I've been spending an exceptional amount of time on YouTube lately. It's slowly taking the place of Instagram for me -- as in, it's the first social media platform I open when I wake up. I've been a bit infatuated with the vlogging community, the funny videos, the movie/TV reviews, etc. It's also the only way I hear new music. I think another reason I really like YT right now is because I have no real connection to it. Instagram scrolling can be fun, but I always find myself checking my profile and looking at the numbers, etc. I don't have that issue with YT since I don't have an account. It's not a chore -- it's just fun. What's your favorite social media platform right now: YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook or other?

  1. Oh I so feel you on the blogging, I've been wondering for months if I should just quit. For now I just decided to reduce my blogging schedule, as far as Instagram I've been over it, I only post if I have nice pics but I don't shoot anymore with blogging and instagram in mind. I'm not cut out for the influencer gig.

  2. I rarely eat red meat and basically eliminated diary from my diet and I love it. I feel like my body is able to digest better and overall I feel great! I also love that you want to give back. I try to do the same with my blog and it does give me a sense of purpose or give people awareness.

  3. I'm with you on the volunteering thing. I've started getting involved with one nonprofit helping domestic foreign workers build their own businesses back home and am doing a fundraiser for another group home. I know we are lucky and I love my pretty things, but we can also do so much too. Dress for Success should be connected to fashion bloggers in some way so fab clothing gets a great second life.
Oh and i have no patience or time for YouTube but know it can be addictive. When I have time in a few years, lol...

  4. I don't like to watch videos as they are too time consuming. I can scroll through pictures or words so much faster, so YouTube is not for me. In general, I've been spending a lot less time on social media, but I would have say my favorite is still Instagram as the people are the most supportive and nice there.

  6. I've been doing this for 8 years so I hear ya! There is a burn-out and sometimes we need to take a vacation! Take a week off and you will feel refreshed and ready to create again! When it comes to skin care I hear ya about water. I need to drink more! I drink coconut milk and almond milk because I don't drink dairy. I haven't noticed any skin changes but it's been 20 years for me. . .so. . .not a good example. I'm trying to cut back on red meat too but man it's hard!! I can't wait to see how you do it!

  7. Instagram is still my #1 social media platform but thanks to becoming a more, I have been spending more time on YouTube; watching any/every video about babies. It’s become a great educational platform for me.

  8. I love your honesty. Wow, blogging for 10 years, I can understand why you would feel the need for more. I love IG as a social media platform because pictures just speak to me more than reading someone's status. I think it's great that you've been on YT. I definitely agree, I find a lot of the new music via YT. Thanks for sharing Cheryl! I enjoyed reading :)

  9. YouTube has been a part of my life for I like forever:) I watch it ALL THE TIME esp. when trying to find reviews or learning new stuff, you know?
And I so hear about stepping back. You've been blogging longer than I for sure, but I feel like that a lot lately too (and I've been only doing it since 2011, but I do feel like nowadays, that's forever too:P)

  11. I hear you ... on EVERYTHING. Firstly, I have never eaten meat so not sure I am the person to tell you if there will be a difference. I am too am interesting in some Non-profit work but haven't yet found what or how.

Nothing is giving me life right now though. Nothing. I am just existing :(

  12. Happy Monday Cheryl; beautiful list. I relate with your point about skin care and blogging. I do try to take care of my skin now more than before and have also started exercising more for a general well being.

I’m also not enthused about IG anymore (have never really been) but I still do enjoy blogging and I wish it would go back to the good old days when it was just all about networking and sharing in ”Blogsville.” These days, all the social network platforms are too “monetized” and not so fun as they used to be. Thanks for sharing.

  13. i love that your into non-profits and are looking for ways to give back, that is awesome. Im still very into blogging/instagram - its still really fun for me, but i definitely love doing stuff with non-profits. I've done work for the ACLU (as a lawyer helping people turned away at airports) and donate to a number of different non-profits. I hope you find one you love!

  15. I cut down my meat consumption a few years ago and only eat grassfed or organic meat and it has made such a difference for my skin as well as my health. I don't think I could ever go full vegan because I do crave a good steak every so often ;p I don't think it's a matter of giving up meat/dairy completely but more about moderation and only eating good, clean options. For me personally, not eating sugar is the best thing for my skin.

  17. I’m all about things skincare! Definitely to work on my diet as well in terms of better skin! I used to love going on YouTube and I feel like i should get back into it! This whole Instagram / blogging / influencer thing can be a bit much and I find struggles with it everyday!

  20. I swear your diet plays a bigger part in your skin then any product! I would be interested to hear your results if you go vegan and how it changes your skin!

  21. IG indeed can be quite taxing. Love watching VLOGs too, especially from fashion and travel bloggers.

  22. Girl, I haven't been blogging nearly as long and I get burnt out every now and again! I also suffer from self doubt a lot of the times and get so hard on myself if I'm not progressing as much as I had hoped. This isn't an easy profession by any means. I love volunteering my time. I use to be in the Junior League in Palo Alto you should check it out!

  24. I love what you wrote about nonprofits because I'm, also, finding that blogging and social media aren't filling that sense of purpose that I have.

  25. I've found instagram more gratifying since I've been sharing topics I'm passionate about that feel important to me. And yessss I love youtube lol.
