About a year ago I told you all about a book I was reading called The Maze Runner. The first movie came out last year and then the second just came out a couple weeks ago. So here's my quick review of The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials.
If you don't know, the series is about a group of kids that were selected for an experiment because they might possibly be the cure to a terrible disease that has affected the human race. But the kids don't really want to be anyone's sheep, so their goal is to escape the doctors and scientists and to join the resistance. But in order to get to the resistance, the kids must travel across a scorched desert.
I'll start by saying rarely is a movie better or even as good as the book version. This is no exception. I saw the movie for The Maze Runner last year and was actually pretty impressed by it because it was very similar to the book. But Scorch Trials is almost the exact opposite.
So much of the film is not at all like the book. Granted, the book version is a bit convoluted, so it's my guess that the screenplay was changed so that the general audience could follow along better. But maybe what should have happened is they should have just edited it a bit more because it felt like the characters were just getting to a destination and then running away, over and over again.
Being the second movie in a three-film franchise, it is kind of destined to fall by the wayside. Everyone tries hard to make the first film great because it sets the standard. And then they usually want the last movie to be great because it ties everything together. But the middle movie (much like the middle child, aka, Stephanie Tanner) gets the short end of the stick.
The Scorch Trials is a decent film, and I have to hand it to the makeup artists for creating some kick ass zombie cranks reminiscent of the ones in I Am Legend. But it kind of misses the mark is won't be very memorable.
Rating: ♥♥
Other movies I've seen recently:
* The Martian - ♥♥♥♥
* Sicario - ♥♥♥
Thinking about seeing The Walk along with Burnt, Crimson Peak...and I might even see the movie Steve Jobs because I was an extra in it! Let me know if you see it and find me in the auditorium audience.
