Think Pink: Interviewing Kid Cadet

Heather KidCadet

I love being able to bring you lovely muses a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of models, designers and all-around fashionistas.

I think my fashion interviews bring great insight, and hopefully, they are also entertaining.

Today I bring you an interview with my friend, model and aspiring singer, Kid Cadet!

What I love--and what you'll most likely love--about Kid Cadet is her unique, creative spunk. She's 5'1", has pink hair, and takes artistic and imaginative photos.

Heather 3Oh to Be a Muse: What inspired you to become a model?
Kid Cadet: All throughout high school and college modeling was never an interest of mine. I was always focused on my studies and if someone from my future would have told me this is what I’d be doing, I would have laughed at them.

It wasn’t until I earned my degree and moved back to south Florida that I began getting into new things. First and foremost, I dyed my hair pink. I believe that was the first moment in my life that I really felt like myself. I also got a fair share of body art. Then I took on the alter-ego of “Kid Cadet.” With all this combined, I felt super comfortable in my body. I joined Model Mayhem just for kicks and discovered this INCREDIBLE photographer called Dangerously Dolly. We set up our first shoot and the rest is history!

Muse: You model and you sing. Is there one that you like better--or do you think one will benefit from the other?
Kid Cadet: I will always be a singer first. I’ve been performing my whole life and one day I want to rule the airwaves. But I believe that all of the arts are connected. You need to look a certain way in order to be considered a “pop star.” For every shoot that I’ve done, my main focus is to still be true to myself as an artist.

Muse: It's quite obvious that you have very bright pink hair. What made you decide to dye your hair such a bold color?
Kid Cadet: When people ask me about my hair, I tell them it’s genetics. I honestly feel that I should have been born with pink hair. I didn’t do it for the attention, or to meet new people, or to attract a crowd. I did it for myself because I feel the most comfortable this way.

Heather 1Muse: You don't have a typical model look so what is it about you that makes your modeling so irresistible?
Kid Cadet: People are attracted to what’s different. Sure, you can open a magazine and see a 6-foot tall blonde, but how often will you see a 5'1" pink and purple haired model?

Muse: As a model, what are your thoughts on the state of fashion and fashion designers in 2011?
Kid Cadet: To be perfectly honest, I don’t follow the fashion world quite as often as I should. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work with a few local fashion designers, such as Meow Kiki and Jhor Couture. If it wasn’t for these incredible talents, I could never fully express myself. But hey, I wouldn’t complain if I had to wear Chanel or Miu Miu in a shoot either!!
