So I knew I was definitely going to participate in this first Full Time Fabulous Blog Event; I just had no idea what I was going to do. And from what I've read from the FTF Community on Twitter, it seems like a lot of us were in that same boat.
But I saw Anika's great post so I think I had the right idea in mind. The theme was created by the lovely Sweet of PensandLens!
(look! I'm wearing a jumper!)
My name is Cheryl and I was born in Jamaica. I lived there for all of three years before my parents and siblings got on a plane (yes, a plane) and made the big leap to America--Florida specifically. I grew up in south Florida and recently moved to Arizona.
"From Jamaica"

I speak and understand Patois (the unofficial language of Jamaica), which to me is more or less broken English. I love when my husband, who is of Jewish and Dutch decent, tries to speak it. It makes me laugh for days!
Translate
"Through Florida"
Everyone in Florida goes to the beach
"To Arizona"
Everyone in Arizona hikes

I think the fact that I was born in another country but lived here has given me a lot of love for a broad array of fashion. I have an understanding of cultural fashion that has never gone away, and that has always influenced my looks.
Moving to a new country required a lot of assimilation, but I think I've managed to incorporate a new culture without losing touch with my Caribbean roots. That makes me Full Time Fabulous!
That is such a cute photo of you, hun! I loved this post, it was really neat learning more about you :) I didn't know you were born in Jamaica!

ReplyDeleteAww, baby Cheryl is the cutest ever. This was such a great post - I can't imagine the shock of moving from one country to another and at such a young age!
ReplyDeleteDidnt know u was born in Jamaica,My Bff also named Cheryl of 7years is Jamaican, she taught me hw to spea Patois&cook most of e dishes!
ReplyDeleteGreat to know stuff abt u hun, thanx for sharing.nice pics too
YOU are SO full time fabulous! Love the Patois text, and translation and the Florida/Arizona observations. I think the more we see of the world, on how large it is the more we personally savor the diversity of all expressions. I would love to see how you dressed in Florida (on the beach) than you do in Arizona. Both seem sunny and sandy, and both with different foreign flavors.
ReplyDeleteDefinitley one of your best posts. Look at baby Cheryl with her cute self! Ah hahaha :D
ReplyDeletecheryl, I think you and i would get along, something about your post just makes me feel like you love to be happy and laugh and so do I. Do you miss living in florida? I used to live there many many years ago, I dont miss it as much as i miss san francisco... funny how you can get attached to some places but no others! thanks for visiting my blog :)

The great thing about this is we all got to take our own take- mine was a bit different but it worked too. I love this though. and too cool that we're both Jamaican! beautiful beautiful place- and great food too (I spy the rice and gongou peas!) I laugh so hard at others attempting Patois too- and it really is broken English with a little African tossed in.
ReplyDeleteapparently you were born fabulous :)
ReplyDeleteyour baby pic wearing that jumper is adorable!
it sure is nice to get to know more about you...

The only thing I know about Jamaica is about Bob Marley the color that represents the country and the fun and great music...but I never knew there is more to that...and I am thankful you took us to another world...another part of you...i love the translation the pictures of you growing up...I am so happy that everyone has embraced their real self and is not afraid to show who they are...that is real fashion blogging is all about...

This is a cool post Cheryl! I think it's amazing you can speak and understand the Jamaincan language so fluently. I was just in AZ last month and my mom lives in FL so I know it's like night and day! They are both good in different ways :) Omg and how cute is your baby pic?!
