Movie Review: Kick-Ass 2 and Jobs

♥ Kick-Ass 2
Of course I headed to the theater to see Kick-Ass 2 as soon as it came out because of how much I loved the first movie back in 2010. You can read my short review of Kick-Ass and then come back here for the sequel.

Aaron (Kick-Ass) and Chloe (Hit Girl) are at it again in this not-so-comic book superhero movie about good people dressing up in costumes to fight crime. Only in this second installment, they deal with an evil army of villains. Kick-Ass and Hit Girl have to figure out whether the world would be a better place if they leave the masks and costumes behind, or if their masks and costumes are their true selves.

I just want you all to know that I vastly enjoyed this movie. It's not supposed to be as serious as the other comic book movies, but it still provides the gore and action, i.e. don't bring your kids! It also has a way of making you remember why you used to like certain actors like Nick Cage in the first one and Jim Carrey in this one. Plus, how versatile is Aaron Taylor-Johnson? He's the same guy from Anna Karenina and Savages--and he's British too. Don't even get me started on Chloe Grace Moretz (especially since I just read she's going to be in Dark Places). I want to be her when I grow up.

♥ Jobs
Let me preface this by reminding you all that I live in California, and by California I mean the Bay Area, and by the Bay Area I mean Silicon Valley. So the movie Jobs is pretty much a big deal here in Apple's backyard, as I'm sure many Apple employees were sitting next to me in the theater as I watched.

What this movie did well was provide me with a Steve Jobs back story that I was unaware of (because I don't read books or Wiki pages about him), and the story of Apple in its early years. I can tell you that Steve was super creative, highly ambitious and crazy cutthroat--to the point of possibly being a psychopath or a sociopath. By that, I mean Steve did some things that would classify him as a terrible person in order to make Apple what it is today. But behavior like that can be seen in many smart people who harness it to create great things, instead of chopping up bodies and throwing them into the ocean Dexter-style.

What this movie did not do well is make me leave it feeling like I could relate to Jobs in any way. It sort of made him unlikable, really. And I didn't like that feeling (and I'm not saying that because I own an iPod and an iPad--as I don't own a Mac or an iPhone). And it also ends in 1997, which was way before his cancer, before all the i-products and with no mention of Pixar. So I felt a bit let down by the abrupt ending.

But to answer the question on all of your minds, Ashton Kutcher did a great job in his portrayal. Yet, I'm not sure that makes it worth watching, except on DVD. Maybe I should wait for the Woz movie.

  1. Not seen either of these movies and wasn't sure if I was going to. I saw the first Kick Ass movie and thought it was ok, but not as great as I thought it was going to be. Not sure if I will see the Jobs movie, maybe when it's on dvd release. Super reviews :)) Happy Friday! x

  3. I think I'll go wait until that Ashton movie comes out in DVD. The Aaron Sorkin version is the one I'm really excited about:)
I'm a huge Jobs fan, and read the Walter Isaacson book, which was great. Highly recommend, even if you're not a huge Apple fan:D

  4. I can't wait to watch Kick Ass 2. I loved the first one too!! And I didn't think Ashton could be a good Steve Jobs but you proved me wrong. Interesting that they ended the movie before the iProduct explosion. I'm maybe not surprised they ended it before the cancer since I think he was a pretty private guy. Great reviews!

  5. Interesting, I am so out of touch with films at the moment, I've not seen these yet. Oh, and I may be a tad sleep deprived, but did you change your blog layout? It may be delayed, but love it as well! lol :-) /Madison

  7. I like your new design of Oh to Be a Muse! Love butterflies :)

Your movie reviews were really insightful. I've never seen the first Kick-Ass, but I've heard good things so I'm thinking I'll watch the first film on Netflix. I agree about the lead in the film, he's very versatile. I LOVE Chloe Grace Moretz, she's amazing. And going to be the new Carrie!

Jobs. Wow. I was surprised by how much they left out. He made his legacy with the development of the iPhone so I'm surprised that was left out.

    Thanks for posting!

  8. Hey Cheryl! Want to wish you a Happy Labor Day. Have a fun one girl. I haven't seen either of these movies. I need to see the first Kick Ass! HAHAHA I will definitely look it up on netflix. Glad you loved this one. It sounds awesome. I knew Ashton was going to do well in portraying jobs. I saw a Biography on Jobs once and knew about his behavior. It's very typical for people who display genius traits. Usually they aren't liked. LOL But they have a mission to achieve. Which he definitely did. He worked tirelessly to the end. That I admire. I'm going to wait for the DVD on this one. Excellent reviews.

  17. So glad we had the same thoughts on the Jobs movie! How crazy that it ends in 1997. It took so long getting through the 80s that I lost interest and ended up leaving around 1984. It's definitely a movie that would be better to watch at home while multi-tasking!
