What I Loved: January 2018

The Alienist: About a week ago, I finished reading the book The Alienist by Caleb Carr. It was actually written more than 20 years ago, but it popped up on my radar a month ago after seeing commercials for the TV limited series adaptation. The previews looked so good that I knew I had to read the book before watching. The book's premise: in 1896, someone is going around committing horrific child murders in New York City. Since the killer is unknown, a newspaper reporter, the first female employee at the NYPD and a psychologist -- aka an alienist -- come together to create a profile of the murderer. Their hope is that an accurate profile can help them catch the criminal before he kills again. But the closer they get to revealing his identity, the closer he gets to them. If you're into haunting historical fiction, then this book -- and it's accompanying TNT show -- is for you. Here's my Goodreads!

Also recently read: Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Currently reading: The Power by Naomi Alderman

Face Lace: Back in December, Kizzy wore these pretty face stickers on Instagram and I fell in love with them. I thought these Face Lace designs would be so fun for New Year's Eve. These stickers give you a creative way to adorn your face, from simple stars and dots to more elaborate butterflies and flowers. I went with the Loops-a-Daisy design, which is inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The coolest thing is that these Face Lace designs can be used again and again -- for birthdays, bachelorette parties, a glam tea party, etc.
Instagram Stories Highlights: Yes, I totally have a love/hate relationship with Instagram. That's no secret. But every now and then they add something that I actually like. This time around it's the new addition of the Instagram Stories Highlights that have me intrigued (I'll probably get over this feature in a couple months). When you go to your Instagram stories, there is an icon for Highlights. You can then add a story -- a recent or old image or video -- to that highlight and give it a title. Your highlight shows up on your profile. Below is an example of Highlights.

Each of my highlights are categorized: blog posts, shoppable looks, entertainment and beauty. Whenever I share a blog post on my Instagram Stories, I add it to the On The Blog highlight. Same thing applies if I'm wearing a top and I share an IG Story of where you can shop the top, then I add it to the Shop Looks highlight. The benefit of Highlights is that these posts will stay on your profile and not disappear after 24 hours like they do in your Stories.

Normally, the photo that shows up in your categorized highlight is the last photo that you posted. But my girl Tanvi had the bright idea to add color and icons to her Highlights, so I did the same. I feel like this makes the Highlights look more cohesive, especially since the cover photos can be edited to your liking.
Pearl Embellishments: It's no secret that I loved pearl embellishments this month. You remember the pearl cardigan, the pearl two-piece set and the pearl sweater, right? It's safe to say that I now have enough pearl tops (maybe), but I still have a hankering for a pearl embellished pair of denim. Although the ones with pearls all around are cute, I do prefer the kind with pearl embellishments in one specified area. Are you into pearl denim?
