Lookbook: Fashion in the Valley
I'm at a point in my lookbook where I'm getting increasingly close to being fed up. Not fed up with my clothes or how I choose to style them (that's an easy fix: buy more clothes, get creative, read blogs). But instead, fed up with my camera.
It is a Canon EOS Rebel XS DSLR. With all those letters there must be something awesome about it that I just have yet to figure out. Don't get me wrong, I totally love the camera and it takes great pictures. But I can't seem to do anything in my power to get it to blur the background!
All I'm asking is for my photos to turn out like the ones on The Sartorialist or my blogging buddy Lee Oliveira--is that too much to ask? Probably. And these photos were taken too early in the day--not at my usual twilight hour--but I just want some background blur or bokeh. I'm on the side of a mountain, people!

Anyway, my hubby, the dogs and I drove over to Lookout Mountain, which is a mountain that I've climbed a few times. This was not a day for climbing though; it was a day for photo shooting. And despite not loving the way these photos came out at least my legs look long. :)

*Update*
I just got the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, aka the Nifty Fifty lens and I am loving it. I think I will be much happier with my next outfit photos--the lens is amazing!

ReplyDeleteHello to you as well. Are you on Twitter? We should follow each other.

I think your photos are great!
ReplyDeleteI got an impromptu photo lesson this weekend. I think you might want to try playing around with the FStop on your DSLR. The lower the Fstop, the more blurred the background.

You look adorable! Love the entire outfit, especially the top :)
ReplyDeletemy bf is the photographer in the relationship, but i noticed there is always a huge difference when he changes a lens. try borrowing lenses from friends to see the effects of different ones before going out and buying a new one.
ReplyDeleteI love this look- especially the top! Too cute with the fedora too. Congrats to the winner!
ReplyDeleteu look stunning as always
ReplyDeleteI know what you need to tinker with to get your photos to blur but I can't remember what it's called and I don't have my camera with my this weekend unfortunately. Love the backdrop though.
ReplyDeleteI have an amazing camera BUT I am sure I don't know how to take advantage of it's true potential...in the meantime I edit my photos on picnik.com really helped take my pics to another level. There is a feature on there that allows you to blur/fade the background and chose the area of the pic you want to focus on. Hope it helps.

ReplyDeletephotography wise, the first 2 pictures are very good. In the next 2 you look a little bit dark but that's because you're not facing the sun.

Love the look, great pattern on the blouse and cute pink belt. When I got my camera (Cannon rebel xsi) I was wondering the same thing. You definitely have to play around with the settings and keep away from the auto feature. But I have a prime lens that I forgot about until now (don't really like it because there's no zoom) but I'm going to try it for my next round of outfit pics to see how I like it. Thanks for reminding me and good luck with the camera- can't wait to see the new pics!

i love the look ^^ I dont think I would wear because I dont wear shorts often lol but i think it looks great on u ^^
ReplyDeleteHon... you need to fiddle with your aperture settings. To create/reduce depth of field aka "blurry background/in focus front subject" you have to have a 'large' aperture... you need to lower your f-number.
ReplyDeleteI have a Nikon so I'm not sure about Canon cameras but set your camera to Aperture mode (Mode A), your camera should choose shutter speed for you. Then rotate your command dial to get as large an aperture as possible. eg. f/5.6
You will need to experiment and you wil also need to play with exposure. Don't worry about metering or anything like that. keep these at auto.
Your husband takes your photos so get him to press the shutter down halfway to lock focus on you then he can frame the photo 'artistically'... then click all the way to take pic.
If he knows how to manually focus the camera then that's great too.
If self clicking then let the camera focus on you and it should automatically 'choose' to focus on you after the first few pics.
At the momnent it seems that the cam is set to Auto mode with too high exposure and white balance not set.
Hope that's of some help :)
Now on to more important things... hot damn!!! Your legs never end!! I love this outfit and I love that top! You look damn sexy honey. As always, your best accessory... your million watt smile... but your legs are giving that smile a run for the money!
pretty look :) x

We also have a Canon Rebel DSLR but with different numbers. I suggest finding a boyfriend who loves fiddling with stuff and have him deal with it. If not get cozy with Photoshop and start researching lenses!
