Fishtail Braid

This was one of the big hair trends this year. And though I love the double knot and the romantic twist, the fishtail braid is still definitely a favorite.

It reminds me of this side braid I did last year and have yet been able to truly recreate ever since.

Now I know a braid may not be the first look you think of when it comes to weddings, but I think this style is perfect for a summer wedding, especially if it is outdoors.

I just love that you can choose to wear it tight and off to the side like the first photo, or even opt for a looser look that flows down your back. You can even adjust the style by completing the fishtail braid and then wrapping it around your head for when it starts to get hot out.

What do you think of the fishtail braid look for a summer wedding?

As I've expressed in hair-related posts before, I do really like messy hair. I like when messy hair is so messy that it just can't help but look good.

Traditionally, brides bridesmaids and even many of the female guests will don themselves in a tight up-do. But I say, let your hair down--somewhat--and loosen up that look for the perfect summer wedding hair.

It's the summer time so why are you wearing so much foundation? Even at a wedding, there is no need to cake on the product when you can shine without all that makeup.

Keep your summer skin radiant by switching the foundation for a tinted moisturizer. You can even choose a simple spot concealer and some powder if you don't suffer from acne-prone skin.

You will have more of a summer glow if your makeup isn't sinking into the creases of your face because it just can't deal with the heat.

Keep the makeup full of SPF and oil-free!

I'm a lip balm/lip gloss kind of girl. Even at my own wedding I wore very minimal lipstick. But, to each their own. If you want your lip color to stay on during the entire event then you should definitely first apply a balm and even add a concealer as a base to make the color long-lasting.

This is especially important for a summer wedding as it's much easier for your lips to dry out. Top off your lips with a gloss and a lip sealer as a finishing touch.

Are you going to any weddings this summer? Have any hair and makeup tips to share?

  1. For a wedding I had last summer my hair was in rollers for probably more than 24 hours, but it was so worth it! The curls were beautiful! I used MAC lip gloss, and I never wear foundation. I think the fishtail braid is a great look for a summer wedding :)

  2. Love your makeup tips - I am also about a tinted SPF moisturizer, a bit of concealer and powder all year round and you're so right about lightening up on the makeup in the heat! I'm still planning on cutting my hair short in a month or so and I absolutely have to rock a messy updo at least once before then.

  4. Awesome tips, I totally love the fishtail braid. I found a GORGEOUS picture of Dree Hemingway rocking a stunning fishtail braid: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XE50JUI7p70/TeQKQJ7clkI/AAAAAAAABMo/lCX5cfj1ab0/s1600/VOGUE-NIPPON-June-2010-Dree-Hemingway-by-Nathaniel-Goldberg-01.jpg :)

  5. I love your take on wedding beauty. For my wedding, my mom did an amazing hairdo that was long, but with the front pulled back into many twisted loops with seed pearls dotted around. I'm so happy that she managed to be so creative on my special day!
I also did minimal lipstick, I used a rosy lipstick with a pearly pink gloss overtop, but I didn't apply much of either because I was worried about makeup getting on the groom during the big kiss.

  6. I love the fishtail braid! I wish I could wear braids more but I feel like they look strange on me because my hair is so dark- my sisters wear them all the time and they look so good! The messy up-do is my all time fav (you look good without people thinking you've tried so hard). This is super great advice. I've been wanting to do a Wedding/Bride makeover on my blog and this post has totally convinced me to do so! <3 H

  24. I would love to skip the foundation, but that's not an option for me at my wedding! My skin tone is very uneven and I have acne scars. on a day to day basis I got with Bare Escentuals, but on my wedding day I want to look flawless and I don't care if that takes 3 layers of foundation! LOL

  26. I really wish A and M would let me do things like this with their hair! I found this site a while ago for doing fun things with hair and although it is for girls many of the styles can either be adapted or used for ideas. Check it out: http://www.princesshairstyles.com/ There are a few using fishtails :)
