Room + GIVEAWAY

I read this book called Room in May. But first, I must say I haven't made good on my promise to fill up my book shelf with the multitude of books that I've read in 2015. I've been really bad about that. But, when I found out that this was turned into a movie, I knew I had to see it!

The movie was released a couple weeks ago and stars Brie Larson, William H. Macy, Joan Allen and young Jacob Tremblay (you might know his older sister Emma from Elysium). If you recall, the novel is told from the perspective of a 5-year-old kid. In the movie, which was actually written by Emma Donoghue -- the writer of the novel -- 5-year-old Jack contributes to the narration here and there.

The premise is a young woman is held captive in a room with her 5-year-old son. She was kidnapped when she was 17 and has lived in this room for seven years. After two years of living in the room, which is actually a small shed in a backyard, she gives birth (the result of the relations she's forced to have with her older captor) to her son Jack. This means, Jack has lived his entire life in this room. In order to cope with her situation, the mother convinces Jack that room is real and everything outside of room is fake. The leaves that fall off the trees and land on the skylight are fake; the people he sees on TV are fake; dogs and any big animals are all fake.
One day, after believing that she can no longer live this imprisoned life, the mother decides to tell Jack the truth. Imagine only knowing one thing to be real for your entire existence, and then someone suddenly telling you that this one thing is a total lie? Now imagine that you're learning this at the age of 5. It takes Jack a little while to understand, but soon he believes his mother and they come up with a plan to escape room.

The room escape is certainly the most suspenseful part of both the book and the movie because everything rests on the shoulders of a kid who has never ever been out in the real world. It's intense and done in such a fantastic manner that even I was on my toes (and I've read the book)!

Without giving anything else away, Room is such a well done film that's perfectly acted by all characters. Larson, who plays the mother, is very convincing as a woman who is coping with her dismal reality and her intense love for her son. Then there's Tremblay, who is quite possibly the cutest kid I've ever seen in a movie (as long as he doesn't go the way of Haley Joel Osment). He's absolute perfection as a boy who has to go from knowing nothing to knowing everything. One minute he's a hyper kid playing with makeshift toys, and the next minute he's screaming at the top of his lungs when he can't comprehend his reality.
Honestly, I can't tell you how many times I had to hold back the tears. And it's not like rom-com, chick-flick emotion. It's real, gritty and thought provoking. If there's one movie that you should see this November, it's this one. I'm sure you'll get your thrills with The Hunger Games and Spectre, and you probably can't resist seeing the on-screen reunion of Brad and Angelina in By the Sea, but you should most certainly put Room on your radar. And read the book, too!
