Movies: Blade Runners & Ragnaroks

Last post of the week! Sharing a recap of some of the movies I've seen in the past couple of months. I would have loved to include more films on this list, but frankly, the movie scene has been less than stellar lately. I had high hopes for Flatliners, Suburbicon and The Dark Tower and they got such terrible reviews that I'm just waiting to watch them at home for free. Although, now that I have MoviePass...who knows? Anyway, on to the reviews!

Blade Runner 2049 -- opened 10/6: I really don't know why more people haven't seen this movie. It's actually really, really good. I'm not just saying that because I'm biased and I love pretty much everything Ryan Gosling does. It's also directed by Denis Villeneuve who made Arrival, Sicario and Prisoners, so...how sway?

But the movie itself has a wonderful story and is breathtakingly beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if it won a ton of visual awards come Oscar time. It's not a remake of the Harrison Ford original. It takes place about 30 years after, and Gosling plays a blade runner who retires old replicants (spoiler alert: Gosling is a not just a blade runner, but he's also a new model replicant as well). But the true story is a secret that Gosling discovers that could change society forever. And Ford is the key to opening up that secret.

My only real issue with this movie is that Jared Leto's "old wise one" character can get pretty annoying, and the film itself is a bit longer than it should be. But Gosling really drives this movie from start to finish, as he takes you on a journey where you think you've uncovered the secret until you realize you're completely wrong.

Thor: Ragnarok -- opened 11/3: Based on the reviews -- and the fact that this is a Marvel movie -- I'm sure many people went out and saw Thor last weekend. I'm a big comic book movie fan so I was definitely not going to miss this one, especially with the new, fun feel. In Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth's Thor finally gets to let his hair down, or should I say, cut it all off! Not having to wear the blonde wig allowed Hemsworth to finally have some fun with his Marvel character. It's clear that that's what the writer and director were going for as this film is just as much action as it is comedy. They definitely took a page out of the Guardians of the Galaxy book.

I might be in the minority with this, but at times I think Ragnarok tries a bit too hard to be funny, especially since none of these actors are known as comedic actors whatsoever. But for the most part, they do a good job stringing the story along. And that story by the way is that Thor finds himself imprisoned on the other side of the universe where he has to fight in a gladiator match against the Hulk. He then has to recruit a team to get back to Asgard to defeat the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home.

The Hulk gets to actually have some fun dialogue and we get to see Blanchett in a way that we've never seen her before. And for personal reasons, I was super happy to see Tessa Thompson play Valkyrie because that's going to be an amazing Halloween costume for me next year!

  8. We are going to see Thor: Ragnarok this weekend. Actually a friend of ours who saw the movie said the same thing you did about the humor being a little try hard at times but it was fun. I'm so excited Cate Blanchett is on it!
