Trend Watch: Feathered Hair

The feathers in your hair trend is not that new, but I do feel like many people will be rockin' this look come spring and summer. With that said, I thought I'd drop some knowledge on how to properly wear a feather in your hair.

(note: I'm not the feather police, so feel free to wear this look however you please--these are just my tips, imo)

Unlike the hair tinsel trend that I mentioned in a makeup and muses post in January, I actually like the idea of putting some feathers in your hair.

Yigal Azrouel featured this style with delicate black feathers adorning textured buns. For the most part, this actually looks pretty well done as the feathers are not attached to a headband or anything like that. Instead, they are standalone feathers that are wrapped around the hair.

But just because people are sticking feathers in their hair doesn't mean you can just go about it all willy-nilly.

Case in point, this Cushnie et Ochs runway look.

Were they even trying? You can't just stick a feather in the back of a bun and call it a complete look.

Some people even saw this as offensive or mockery. (on Refinery 29)

I just don't think it's clever. Where would I go with my hair like this? I mean, it just looks like I'm trying to find any way possible to incorporate the feather trend.

If they had wrapped it around her hair instead a la Yigal Azrouel, then I think the outcome would have been more positive and stylish.

Maybe I'm being too tough--what do you think?

And although they come in a wide range of colors, I don't think you should get too crazy with your choices. Too many colors in your hair will probably make you look more circus clown than chic.

I also enjoy the feather look when intertwined in a braid.

You can get about a dozen feathers around 10 inches for under $25 on Etsy or you can probably get this done at your local salon.

Honestly, if you don't get too Ke$ha or Steven Tyler inspired when it comes to adding feathers to your hair then you should be OK.

If you're interested in trying out this trend for yourself then check out the DIY feather extensions on Free People.

I have to say, it's a cool look, but I know I couldn't pull it off.

  31. I have been noticing this a lot around NYC. Women have gone feather crazy. Earrngs, necklaces, bags and now hair. I actually love it! The hair braided with the feathers looks great. I also love the use of feathers in headbands.
