Originally, I was going to do a review of a different movie, but then I decided that it would be better if I watched it at home instead of in the theater. Plus, another movie came out that piqued my interest even more: Logan Lucky.
If you haven't seen the preview for this film, then you should know that Logan Lucky is about a West Virginia man named Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) who teams up with his one-armed brother (Adam Driver) and sister Mellie (Riley Keough) to steal money from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. So yes, it's a heist movie, but it seems to rely heavily on the comedic aspect more so than the action. And it's certainly a different style for Channing Tatum.
But that's what we love about Channing, isn't it? He's not afraid to be different as we've seen him make not one, but two movies about male stripping. He's shown us that he's a top notch hip hop dancer. He has comedic chops and he's not afraid to don a southern (or cajun) accent (he is from Alabama afterall).
So it's nice to see an actor like Tatum continue to do things that similar actors just aren't doing. He doesn't have a Star Wars/Star Trek franchise under his belt, and he's yet to appear in any big Marvel or DC movie. He's a unique one who has no qualms taking unique roles (very similar to one of my faves).
And did I mention that Tatum produced this comedic heist film? And it was directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Magic Mike, Erin Brokovich, Traffic, Pleasantville, etc), who apparently came out of retirement for this film. It also stars English actor Daniel Craig rocking a ridiculously entertaining southern drawl. That alone was convincing enough to make me want to see this movie!

While this movie will no doubt receive a ton of comparison to the Ocean franchise (and granted, there are similarities), it can still stand out on its own because of the cast and the southern flair. It's nice to see a smart heist movie that takes place in the south as those types of films are usually reserved for a more polished crowd. And even though it's great to watch Channing on screen, I really thought Adam Driver is what made this movie shine. As the hubs said, his face is perfect for this role -- and so was his West Virginian twang.
There was some awkward character development here and there (Sebastian Stan's weird monologue about his dietary habits and Seth McFarlane's crazy English accent and rants). And they probably played up southern stereotypes more than appreciated (especially if you watch Sweet Home Oklahoma). But the fun was in the relationship between Channing and Adam and also Channing and the young actress who played his daughter.
If you're looking for something fun to watch this weekend (especially since MoviePass just offered everyone unlimited movie tickets for $10 a month), then go check out Logan Lucky. But you could probably have just as much fun watching it at home, too.
Rating: ♥♥♥
*this movie would have been rated ♥♥♥♥ if it had less Seth McFarlane and more Adam Driver...just saying.
WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
OTHER MOVIES ON MY RADAR:
- Wind River
- Kingsman: The Golden Circle
- Flatliners
I was going to say that this doesn't really sound like my cup of tea, but Channing Tatum is hot and Steven Soderbergh is incredible. I'll give it a watch!
ReplyDeleteYea, Soderbergh came out of retirement to make this movie so that must mean something, lol.
DeleteAh! I was saving it for home experience. I wanted to go watch a Hindi movie this weekend but it is not playing here *sob* - I might go for Girls Trip - Have you seen it?

I have not seen Girls Trip, but it got better reviews than expected. Maybe it's the new Bridesmaids? :)
DeleteI've been wondering about this movie, actually! I'm not a big fan of Seth McFarland, but I love Channing Tatum and Adam Driver. Sounds like it's worth a view!
ReplyDeleteI think we would be on the same page then. Adam Driver was particularly good in this one. They should have given he and Chan more screen time together and just removed all of the Seth McFarlane's time completely, lol.
DeleteI am definitely interested in this movie based on your review. I also live 40 minutes from West Virginia so that also peaked my interest as well.
ReplyDeleteI haven't even seen the previews for this one, but it definitely sounds interesting, and who doesn't love them some Channing Tatum?!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at Channing Tatum... LOL but seriously this does look like a good movie... I'll definitely watch-- even if Channing is fully dressed ... ;) Shell
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Logan Lucky, but I'm kind of out of it when it comes to the movie world. It looks like the type of file I'd enjoy. I was never into heist movies until a few years ago, but now I really enjoy them. And yes, Channing Tatum is Fab
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! We don't get to see the movies much anymore, and it's a shame. Reading this made me want to schedule a date night with my hubby stat! :)
ReplyDeleteI saw the trailer and was intrigued. Daniel Craig's accent cracked me up :)
ReplyDeleteAnything with Channing Tatum in is a must see for me! Hopefully I will watch this soon!
